How big of a power supply does a r9 285 need?

Made my build on pc partpicker and went to buy it, the guy then told me that a 500w power supply would not be enough to power my system at all (i5 4440+r9 285) And insisted that I need a 750w power supply, so I went with it. After reading around I think I was tricked... Some people are saying this is enough for even 2 cards. Was I tricked?

The r9 285 uses ~300watts under load(full stress). Then you probably need about 150 watts for rest of the system.

A good quality 500 watts would scarcely suffice. 550-600 watts would be a safe choice.
