I am starting a new build within the next couple weeks and needed advice. I was planning on basing the build around the newer Intel chipset. I haven't had a new pc build in over 3 years so I'm a bit out of touch with the new tech/chipset etc. I was going to use custom PC shop for the build, but was considering ordering some of the parts myself. Also I already have 2 GTX 980's and 2 256 Gig SSD's so those components are already determined. I have no intention of overclocking so I didn't want to base the system around that.

Yeah my budget is undecided at the moment, I will likely be buying the components piece by so it's somewhat flexible. The reason for the new build is my current desktop died. Tried everything and cant find the problem. I was over 3 years old so I'm ready to rebuild. Rebuilding seemed like the way to go for me since I have two brand new 980's sitting here and some semi new 256 SSd's. I was unsure of where to start picking the components as well as what chip set to go with without. I usually spend a bit more than budget pricing w/o getting ridicilous.

I'm guessing the Intel 6 core 5000 series are overboard cpu's? After reading some reviews 6-core isn't necessary for gaming, at least in noticeable performance. I could be wrong. My guess is 1150 socks and Z97 are the newer platforms? I was currently using lga 2011 with a 3930k but that platform didn't seem to become necessary or even take off very well in the long run.

Yeah I'm kind of reviewing all the parts to refresh my memory on the newer tech. Everything you list is right on target.

I'll likely order from newegg as 1 or 2 orders. I am noticing that model of mobo is out of stock. With that said I'm under the impression Z97 is the way I would to go when browsing other models.

I'm seeing many different listings when I'm checking for SLI support. Some motherboards list pci 3.0 1-16x 1-8x 14x whereas others list pci 3.0 16x when single cards dual 8x when dual cards. Then theres a few that have about 3 pci 3.0 16x. Any advice for that?
