Merry Xmas!

I'm building my first system in a long time:

Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H rev 1.1.

Bios F18 CPU: Intel Core i7 306A9H

SATA problems: can't see my HD nor my SSD.

Only the DVD SATA on port 2(although Win 7 won't install from it, it gives an error message to "insert bootbale media").

I can boot from an USB tough, except it doesn't see my HD.

But the BIOS doesn't see my WD HD on SATA 0 nor does it see my ADATA SSD on SATA 1. ( ADATA XPG SX900 256 GB SATA III 6 GB/sec SandForce 2.5 Inch SSD ASX900S3-256GM-C)

I have SATA mode set to AHCI in Bios.(Tried IDE/RAID, but those didn't help either, nor did resetting the BIOS).

The SATA ports are enabled and hot swap disabled (I've tried with hot swap enabled as well).

The DVD can be seen on any SATA port (if I move the connections around), but not the HD, nor the SSD.

I was thinking about flashing the BIOS to the newest (20, beta)....Also logged a ticket with Gigabyte tech support.

But maybe I'm doing something stupid with cables ?
I did change cables and SATA ports btw.

I could see two similar problems:
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2442798/bios-windows-sata-problems.html

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2714
(About the above, I tried taking the Video card out, but it didn't help).

I also took battery out (for more then half an hour) and restored optimized defaults in BIOS, to no avail...

Merry Xmas!

Solution

Happy 2015!

Tried a couple more things and had success with a Seagate 1TB HD installing Win 7 from an USB unit that I've bought from Future Shop together with an SSD ( that I haven't opened yet).

Still have to:

- Find out what's wrong with my WD HD and ATADAT SSD.

Some people here have tried jumpers on the WD HD:
"I installed two jumpers,
5&6 and 7&8, and now it is detected in the BIOS, IDE
mode. Does it make sense? Neither both of them alone
works.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1817067/western-digital-wd10ezex-recognized-gigabyte-k8vt800-rev.html"

Or

- Try RAID with 1 disk
-...
Try installing windows with only the boot drive in place. If it works, you can install the other drive after drivers and etc are installed and your comp is running right. Flashing the BIOS to the latest version is always good too. I always flash to the latest version then set up the BIOS before windows install.

Thanks, but the official Win 7 won't install from the DVD SATA (port ), it gives an error message to "insert bootbale media".

I can boot from an USB tough, except it doesn't see my HD (In the MDT deployment wizard I have on that USB to install a custom Win 7 image).

I could try flashing the BIOS, altough I was thinking of waiting for he gigabyte tech support first.

It gives an error message to "insert bootbale media".

I'll try disabling the SATA (3 I presume?).

You can download an ISO file any version of windows 7 here:
http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

Make a bootable disk with the ISO file. Undo any of the USB wizards you have installed and make sure BIOS is set to optimized defaults and memory timings and speed are correct too. I always flash the latest BIOS if the current version is not the latest, then set it all up correctly and install windows then the MB drivers and etc. Getting the latest BIOS and setting it up first and foremost has always made life easier for me.

I've flushed the latest BIOS (F20e) and loaded optimized defaults to no avail: it still doesn't see the HD nor the SSD on SATA 2 ports (nor on 3).

I don't know how to check memory timings and speed?

I'll try again to make bootable USB with a Win 7 ISO, but last time I've tried that it couldn't install Win b/c it couldn't find a fixed disk to format (only a remove bale one).

Make sure the boot drive power and sata cables both are seeded tight into the board and into the drive too. Don't mess with the boot sequence after setting optimized defaults. Tap the "F12" key during boot to get into the boot manager and select the optical drive that has the win install disk. Install windows with only the boot drive installed, otherwise windows will install boot files on the other drive as well.

Enabling XMP Profile1 in BIOS, should set up your memory correctly unless you have faster than 1600MHz memory.

I remember I had a really hard time figuring out how to install a new WD Black 1TB HDD a few months back. Turned out it was set up with a GPT format and I had to change it to a MBR format before it would work at all and windows would even see it for some reason. I used a third party app, a paid for Acronis True Image. It saw the HDD and I was able to change it to a MBR disk.

Only the DVD is present when pressing F12, same as in BIOS.
But I can't boot Win7 (nor XP) from the DVD, says "insert bootable media and press a key".

However I can also boot from an USB, but again it won't install Win 7, b/c it can't format the HD (nor the SSD): basically it doesn't a fixed disk when trying to format, just a removable one. Even when I had just the SSD (or the HD ) connected.

The same cable that works on the DVD doesn't work on the SSD, nor on the WD HD. I made sure that the cables are fully pushed in.

I did take the CMOS battery out for more then half an hour and restored optimized defaults.

I've also enabled XMP Profile1 in BIOS, trying to set the correct timings for memory, but it didn't make any difference....

That's good to know for the future, but atm I have no Win OS on the system.
Maybe I should just buy a different HD (and return one if the new one will work)?

This is from the Adata manual. Can download the PDF here:

http://www.adata.com/index.php?action=product_download&cid=3&piid=169&lan=en

Step 7
-
Configure
the BIOS and Partition
the drive

A.
Power on your computer system normally and follow the on-
screen instruction during boot-up to proceed into the BIOS or CMOS configuration
menu.

B.
Select the Auto function in the BIOS/CMOS menu that represents the
SSD. This will allow your system to auto-detect the disk.

C.
Locate the SATA settings menu item and ensure the motherboard SATA
ports are enabled.

D.
To save new settings and exit the BIOS/CMOS setup menu, choose the
Save and Exit option.

E.
Reboot the system or device allowing the changes to take effect.

The SSD and the HD don't work on any ports: I've tried SATA 0 and SATA 1 (Those are SATA 3 ports on my mobo) and also the SATA 2,3,4 etc (those are SATA 2).

The DVD can be seen on any SATA port, but can't boot from it.

Are you pulling my leg?

Yes I can select the DVD drive to boot from it via F12, except that it doesn't recognize the media (neither Win7 nor XP)as bootable.

I can boot from an USB but not having a fixed disk, can't install it.

I just bought new HD, SSD and DVD (an USB one) to try to isolate the problem.

Or

- Try RAID with 1 disk
- Try loading the HD drivers from the mobo disk
- Try Ubuntu, or some WE utility like your Acronis that seems to be available for dl from the WD site:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en
- Try the WD HD and the SSD ADATA in another computer.
- Dump them or RMA them
- Go back to Future shop and ask for a refund ,b/c they've charge me twice for the Seagate HD ($69x2), maybe return the SSD.
- Keep talking to Gigabyte technical support, that gave me a preliminary reply among the lines I've seen here: cables, boot order etc.

I 'm really worried about the state of the industry seriously and glad that we got jobs to pay for this junks (i.e. WD HD that don't work with Gigabyte mobos etc), but it may not last for ever, if each one of us is so inefficient (or incompetent) at his/her job :(

Also the best and I'd appreciate more teaching :)
