970's main selling point is its lower power consumption and emitted heat, as well as newer tech with a bit more new features than the almost-a-year-old 290x, although the Red team is churning out new features for its GPU's as we speak, and the only remaining 970 exclusive, MFAA, isn't supporting many games at the moment.

That's on pure raw power grounds, individual games performance might differ, some favor AMD, some favor nVidia, not withstanding bad coding (for example, AC:U runs ok on nVidia cards, but it's totally botched on AMD cards. These are few and far in between, for now).

If you don't mind the extra power consumption and heat, and have a PSU good enough in both quality and wattage, go for whichever is cheaper.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_970_SLI/9.html

Go to this link and check out the difference between the frames per second for all the leading GPUs in the market right now. As much as I have seen (and tried) AMD usually gives better price to performance ratio but this new GTX 970 surely steals away that title, plus it is lot less noisy than AMD R9 290x, and even dissipates less heat and let's not forget that if you sli a GTX 970 after adding a few more bucks it blows out the AMD R9 290x out of the water .

Nvidia GTX 970
1. Cheaper (single card)
2. Silent.
3. Newer Technology
4. SLI is better than Crossfire if you decide to add another GPU later

AMD R9 290x
1. A little bit faster than GTX 970 in some games.
2. No other points in this favor :D

Do you even know what your talking about?
SLI is worse than crossfire, SLI has so many issues like a crap ton of stutter, textures flickering, while crossfire only has stuttering, and 290x has better technology built in thanks to its GCN build.

Stutter seems to be getting better on SLI. Granted I only have tried a few recent games, AC:U being the most recent, and I have tried Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and couple of other lower req games like SR4 and CS:GO, I haven't noticed any stuttering, except during Bioshock Infinite benchmarking (not in actual gameplay).

I had to look hard for it. Although Flickering is definitely an issue in Skyrim

They perform about equal when stock but the 970 is quieter, uses less power and has more overclocking headroom

You're not getting the 290x are you? The 970 is, all round, a better card. Also, the bloke who was talking about Crossfire being better than SLI is lying. The only advantage is that you don't need a bridge. More games are optimised for nvidia so they should scale much better. It looks like you're only going for the single card so do yourself a favour. Get the 970

the 290x is better in so many ways the only thing the 970 is better at is running higher resloutions

How is the 290x better? Did you not see the benchmarks I linked? The 970 also has so much more OCing headroom because of its low power usage and operating temperatures while the 290x starts to throttle after only a small increase in voltage. The only upsides the 290x has are:
-Bridgeless Crossfire
-Great if you don't have a heater. Doubles as a cooktop.

hahahah benchmarks yeah i have a 7950 boost and on benchmarks it shows the 780 getting 70-90 fps on 1080p ultra on bf4 on conquest and guess what i get the same FPS. For christsakes most benchmarks are shit just trying to promote Nvidia and AMD.
