SSD space used 185 Gb but sum of folders only 73 Gb?

Hey, guys!

I noted it before with SSDs and I was told to deal with it, but this makes no sense. My C drive shows with 185 Gb out of 223 full, so I have under 39 Gb left. When I calculate content of each folder, including Windows, Program Files, Program data folders, I only have 73 Gb. Where is all other space?

This is Intel 520 SSD, I never manually installed any firmware- I was reassured on the forum that firmware comes already pre-installed on the SSD, that I do not need to Defragment SSD, and that Windows performs Trim on its own. Well then- where are more than 100 Gb of space? How can I get it back, or at least- locate what uses it? I am running out of space and soon will not even be able to install updates. Please, let me know if you have any thoughts. Thank you.

your forgetting hidden files more than likely. also how much ram do you have? 16gigs in you sig. Check the paging file, (windows prob set it to equal your ram) and if you have hibernation turned on that is eating up more hard drive space.

for hibernation open a cmd window and enter powercfg.exe -h off

for paging set it to 1024 for min and max. (a little paging doesn't hurt)

to clean up windows files (old windows updates) use this on windows 8 and above:

open a admin cmd prompt and enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

For the first and last operation it says, "Elevated Permissions required", it did not go through. My hibernation should be off, but who knows- sometime this computer changes settings without me. I have 16 Gb, but I am missing over 100 Gb of data. How much space would hidden files take? How do I get to paging? Thank you.

easiest way to get an elevated prompt is to do this:

1) right click desktop
2) goto new > shortcut
3) type in cmd.exe
4) name the shortcut (ie: cmd)
5) right click on the new shortcut and go to properties
6) make sure the shortcut tab is selected and click Advanced
7) check the run as administrator and click ok
8) click ok again and run the shortcut and you have an elevated prompt.

you also have an appdata folder in your user folder thats hidden that saves settings and such that is hidden. chrome saves cache files there. to help clean this out ccleaner or bleachbit programs will remove old temp and hidden flies. but it will log you out of websites if you clear cookies and passwords.

To get to paging file (in windows 8) open up the control panel and select system.

once there you can click on advanced system settings on the left side menu.

click the settings button under performance.

click the advanced tab and click the button labeled change...

select custom size and enter 1024 for initial and max sizes and click set. then ok

it will ask you to reboot to get the new settings.

I'd also turn off 'allow hybrid sleep'

I have 2432 Mb allocated for paging. That is 2.5 Gb? Thank you for instruction on how to get there- it was worth to check, and I am going to leave it alone. My App Data folder is not hidden- I made it visible because I use it. It contains 8 Gb of data. Still not explaining missing 100 Gb of space. Not arguing with you in no way- just saying- think more :) Gotta be something else. This is my music computer and it stores many sample libraries, but all space should be accounted for. The folders only occupy 73 Gb, while 185 Gb is used. Where are 110+ Gb? My other Haswell desktop computer has nothing on it- I store all files on another drive, and it also almost 70% used of 240 Gb SSD, and I only built it last year- have nothing stored on it other than OS and few school Word documents and power points. My Lap Top with 120 Gb SSD (2008) lost 60 Gb soon as I installed Cakewalk Sonar which supposed to be 2-3 Gb (Music production software). I dont get it at all. All folders show 7-8 Gb, and when I sum everything, it does not add up.

Thank you for the idea. I downloaded it but... Did you try to use this software? I do not even install Windows 7 drivers that "supposed" to work in Windows 8 on this computer- it is very sensitive in regard to compatibility. Has thousands of dollars of software on it. I can not afford any more issues than it already has.

Found a HUUUGE reason for this if you use Google Drive! I found that Google drive keeps a sync copy of folders shared with you in your /users/name/Google Drive/shared folder name. I had a friend share a large folder (was about 90gb) with me, and lo and behold - there was a whopping 98gb missing on my C: drive. I took myself off the share list for this folder (but kept a link to the web share of the folder), and the missing storage showed up in available immediately.
