New GPU Receiver stops working

Just got the gigabyte 970 my first GPU. I was using a receiver to connect my computer to my 4 speakers and subwoofer. Then running an hdmi from receiver to my monitor to show video when using integrated graphics by intel. Now I switch to this new discrete card and I am unable to get the back speakers working.

Essentially turning my surround sound experience into just stereo. :'(

I tried recalibrating the receiver to see if that helped but my graphics card just doesn't seem to stop being stubborn.
I have an i5 3570k asus z77 sabertooth Mbeki and just normal parts for everything else. My receiver is a Sony str dn1040 highly rated and never had a problem. So someone please give me some insight into this issue.

Yes that's what I said in my first post, connect the display right to the video card and the sound card to the reciever.

The HDMI from the computer just goes to the Receiver. Then a separate HDMI goes from the receiver to my monitor. I don't understand what you are recommending I do though.

Take the sound card outputs from the motherboard and use that to the reviever instead of HDMI, set the sound card to be the default audio device. You probably have optical out on the card and an optical in on the reciever for that.

Okay I plugged the optical (spdif) cord into my motherboard because it has an integrated sound card. Then put it into optical in on my receiver. However, I see no options on the receiver to turn it to only listen on one channel and watch video on another channel. So should I just run the HDMI from the videocard directly to the TV and then the optical directly to the receiver?
