First I want to apologize if this question has been answered, but i know next to nothing about networking, and after searching I have not found anything that helped.

Now that thats out of the way heres my issue. I've noticed that whenever i want to download or upload something I seem to be locked in at about 10% of my actual speed. I noticed this a long time ago (even when i was a teen), and just kinda accepted it as the way things are. I assumed it was just so that you dont choke out other things youre doing online while you have a download going. I however have a 50mb/s down 10mb/s up connection and would really like to get more of that available.

Is it even possible to open up more of my available 50mb/s rather than being stuck at 10%? If so then how?

Solution
As said, your download speed is what it should be. It's somewhat confusing but Mbps is megabits per second, and MBps is megabytes per second. The use of a lower-case or capital 'B' distinguishes one from the other.
Where are you getting your download speed numbers from? 50Mbps is 6MBps. people often misunderstand this and think there is a problem.

Download speed also depends on your local network and the server you are downloading from. If there's really a problem you need to talk to your ISP.

im paying for 50mb/s down 10mb/s up and according to speedtest.net thats what im getting (within margin of error) and my torrent and direct downloads cap out just under 6mb/s like you said. i know there is no real issue with this i was just wondering if there was a way to open up more of that 50mb/s for these activities
