Cpu Running at 255°C

Hey my Cpu jumps to 255°C shortly after playing a game or anything that puts any sorta strain on my Cpu but its not running that high clearly :P i have reapplied thermal paste i changed from my stock fan to a H100 recently which made no difference. My Cpu idols at around 22°C and only gets to around 40°C running Crysis 2 Maxed but after a few minutes playing any game it just jumps to 255°C my Cpu is a AMD FX-8120 Overclocked to 4.2Ghz iv tried lowering it but it made 0 difference.

More about cpu running 255c
  1. Impossible!!! Your chip wud melt at that temps!!!

Wrong readings on ur software:) The chip would shut itself down to prevent damage long before 225C !! :D
  2. Sounds like a false software reading.

Your chip would melt through its own socket if that happened for real!

Yea....thanx a lot for copying and re-wording my answer...a$$hole
  4. Any idea how i would go about fixing it? every temp program iv used has shown the same result CPU hits 255 and my CPU throttles itself down to 1.4Ghz only way to Reset it is to reset my computer.
  5. Hi :)

WHICH temp programs are you using specifically ??

    All the best Brett :)

if it's throttling, contact the company that you bought it from and get it RMA'd, sounds a bit like a bad sensor to me, i doubt it's actually idling at 22C unless your living in a real cold place
  7. HWMonitor can sometimes act funky if that's what you're using. Here's an example of my brother's machine

Take a look at FANIN1 and the temperature of the Corsair Force 3 SSD. No way in heck that the SSD is running at 128C  it's still cold to the touch as well.

do you mean 255(F) and not (C).?
    that = 121(C)

    might still go pop..!

it's also idling quite low, 22 degree's which would be freezing if it's in Fahrenheit

Are u sure its "throttling" ?!! I really think the chip is fine, all BD chips idle at 1.4GHz when there's nothing to do, its an energy saving feature :D
I still think its either bad software, or faulty sensors, but i'll put gr8 emphasis on d first one . cheers :)

Theres a pic of it idling and i pretty much assumed the same the sensors are broke is the only way to fix it to replace the MB?
  11. ^coretemp is giving 4.2GHz and CPU-Z is giving 5.2GHz?

and no, the sensor on the CPU isn't affected by your motherboard
  12. What does BIOS say?
  13. Bios temps are roughly 37 Degrees
  14. That looks much more reasonable :)
  15. So does anyone know how to fix this? and if not is there a way to turn off the computer slowing down when it reads that high?

if the chip thinks it's running that hot, it will always throttle, you could try RMAing it and seeing what they can come up with
  17. 255 sounds like the limit of an 8bit number, so it's probably a software overflow or the sensor is borked.

Either way, there's no way your cpu is hitting 255.
  18. So i swapped my CPU out for a different one and so far it hasn't jumped to 255 Degree's but its running cold according to Core temp and CPUID HW its jumps between 16 and 25 degree's constantly, speed fan seems to be correct but why aren't the other 2?
  19. it's probably a bad sensor on the other chip
  20. Speed fan get the temperatures like the bios. The first is the System the second is Cpu temperature it screws a bit with the other onboard detectors and in some motherboards doesn’t work good but is very reliable.

I use it minimized in sys tray and I can see the system temperature always is more important to me.
  21. hey i have a amd fx 6100 and the same thing happened to me a couple of times so i would not worry about it ,, because amd has only one sensor that is on its 1st core .. but its ma 2nd core thats goin upto 256 deg celcius .. i use core temp to monitor ma temperature and as u can see it takes the readin from 1 sensor and tries to depict the other 5 core readings,, at first i was shocked and thought of replacin ma processor,, i have gigabyte 78lmt-s2pt .. which has Easytune6 to monitor the temp and fan speed and stuff which shows cpu temp as 42 degrees.. happened while i was playin Dishonored.. its all cool and ur processor is just fine.. chilllaxxxx
  22. Almost certainly a dead sensor. Sensors ALWAYS fail either full scale low or full scale high, and 255 just happens to be 2^8-1, so I'd wager the 8-bit temperature sensor failed full scale high.
  23. hahahaha...
    FF'C (hex)
looks like an SNA (signal not available) to me...hahahahaha
