Hi. I wanted to buy a keyboard and mouse. I want wired to reduce dropouts and key delays. I already have a wireless option. It's ok except when it isn't picking up the signal. Or the motherboard usb2 ports are hot in the back, maybe from the PSU or the computer being on a while.

Any suggestions? My current wired keyboard is an Acer from an old pre-build I bought. It is a cheap keyboard. But miraculously works after about 6-8 years. Same with the wired Acer mouse.

Wireless set: Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000: Usb2 BlueTrack wireless - 2.4Ghz Transceiver v6.0, Model: 1364. Keyboard 3000 v2.0 - Model 1379. Mouse - Microsoft Wireless 5000, Model 1387.

I have noticed most places do not sell wired keyboards and/or mice. How has the development for wireless been? My wireless set has only a usb2 dongle. What are the newer types like? For regular use, documentation and metadata, creative/media, gaming, etc? I am using the computer for regular use, documentation and metadata, creative/media (audio, video, photo and some graphical).

With wired keyboards I see a lot of keyboards with blue, red or green lights. Not the button's capacity to be pressed. Can the light be turned on/off? Or are they always back-lit?

I have considered the cheap $20 keyboards. But I think I should spend between $40 - $60 on sale. I don't think I need many extra or hot keys. I don't use most of them.

The mice look normal or have more buttons. I don't think I need fancy. But are there suggestions? The range on sale is probably $20-$40.

So, what should I look for? How are these keyboards?

Most of the better wired keyboards are oriented for gamers, hence the fancy LED lights.

The newer wireless keyboards still use the USB dongle. If you are having reception issues, you may be better off getting it further away from the computer with a USB extension cord.

You don't need to spend a ton on a wired keyboard set. I like the ones from Logitech, or Amazon Basics.

Thanks for the info digitaldoc.

So how do I set-up the usb dongle? I understand the plug goes into the back of the case into the motherboard. Then I stick the wireless dongle into the other end? So how far would I try and place the end of the USB extension cord?

But do those LED lights have an off switch? Maybe some keyboards? I can't find anything in the product descriptions unless I missed it. But they only mention the lights.

A 2-3 foot USB extension cable is ideal. Here is one:

Most of the keyboard do not have the LED's on a switch, and are on all time when the computer is active.

The USB dongle can be placed anywhere that it is away from the metal case, and you won't step on it. Putting it on a wall is fine if that works for your situation.
