Hello,

My WD My Book 3TB external hard drive is making weird noises. It does it for a bit and then stays quiet. Device manager shows that I have connected the hard drive but other software doesn't show it. Is it dead and what is causing that noise?

Sound: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0TrAotjdItb

Thanks for any help!

when a drive makes a strange noise it is the sound of some sort of mechanical failure or an impending some drives do make noises large ones especially as they are switching between drive platters. that does seem to indicate by the looks of things a failure and what you have described seems to be the syptoms of the head inside the drive being damaged if you can get in touch with western digital and if its still in warrenty i would do so they are very helpful and i recently returned a drive to them and they were very helpful.

Disk management isn't showing it. After noises it goes quiet(like it was shut down but I still have power cable and USB plugged.)
