Best GPU for My Current System and Budget?

Lately I've been playing a lot of DayZ Standalone and have found my system... lacking. I know that DayZ isn't optimized yet, but I also had some trouble with FarCry 4. So, I've decided I want to upgrade, but don't have much of a budget as of now.

First things first, my current rig:

  • ASUSTek P5N-D motherboard
    Intel Core2 Quad Q6700CPU @ 2.66
    Nvidia GTX 550 Ti
    8GB of Corsair (I think it's Corsair) DDR2 RAM
    550W OCZ Fatality PSU
    Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit)
I'm looking to spend somewhere between $100 and $150. I know that's not much, but I'm working with what I have currently.

Now, my questions:

  • 1 -What's the best GPU (in that price range) that my system can support?

2 - Will I notice a big enough difference for it to be worth it?

3 - Is there something else I'd be be better spending that money on?
Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to help me!

Solution
Regardless of any bottleneck , there should be double 3D performance at least . 3x faster , working at 80% = 2.4 .So , it should do .
Most of those old quads respond well to overclocking and the games you mention are heavily dependant on CPU performance, it's not for everyone, but something I feel you should at least look into.
Price is all here, so I'm not going to recommend any particular card yet but your system would be comfortable with any card within your price range, so take a look here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-review,review-32899-7.html Anything take your fancy?
Also bear in mind monitor resolution will play a big part, the higher the res, the more load the graphics card has to deal with for the same quality settings.

TDP 150W? I have no idea what we're talking about here. Sorry!

Awesome. Thank you. Couple of quick follow-ups and I'll be solved. Will my CPU bottle-neck the new GPU? And, without a new CPU will I see a marked performance increase in the games I mentioned?

if you have a quad core i would consider it good enough. a dual core is just really week by todays standards for gaming.

i just like the gtx becasuse of it really low power usage and with your PSU only making 25 amp on the 12v rail (300watts for the GPU and CPU) that I chose the more power effecient power supply.

both gpu's are really good choices tho.

Yeah, I screwed up the CPU in the initial post. That's my bad. I definitely have the Quad Q6700. As far as the two GPUs go, it'll probably come down to pricing. Assuming there's much difference--though I do have a slight preference for Nvidia.

Do you believe the card will help me, though? I don't wanna buy it for naught.

at the settings you can play at with the recommended cards your CPU is a perfect fit. i would guess you might even be able to push a gtx 970 or an old used 7950 for about $100.

this is the max that you can use with your CPU not being a bottleneck in everything.
