I used NewEggs wattage calculator to determine what PSU I should get and it said I needed 912W PSU!
I have an AMD FX 8350
2x4GB 1600 RAM
1 TB 7,200RPM HDD
and an AMD R9 280x GPU.
My question is do I really need a 900W PSU? Thanks for any replies.

The best way to calculate how much power you need is to google the thermal design power (TDP) of the components and add them up.

FX 8350 TDP is 125W
R9 280X TDP is 250W
Rest of system 100W
Overhead 150W
Total: 625W

I'd personally get about a 600-650W PSU just to include the overhead as well as when/if you ever overclock.
