Installing Windows 7 Home Upgrade Version on new PC

Hello All,

I am getting ready to order a new motherboard, i7 CPU, hard disk and Ram. I have Windows 7 Upgrade so I will have to install XP first. I have XP SP1 on DVD. My question is I could have sworn that I need drivers for the DVD or else the install will halt (at some point) as the computer cannot read from the DVD. Or does XP SP1 have all of the drivers it needs?

Sorry for the basic question but my existing PC is 7 years old.

you will have to install xp then the win 7 upgrade to have it work .

I don't see how, you can't upgrade from XP to Win7. You are allowed to, but you physically can't do it. You need to use the "double install method" when upgrading from XP to win7. Just spin the disk.

There is never any reason to mess with xp or a prior version. Windows had always allowed clean installs with upgrade media and that's the only way I have ever done it. Just put the disk in and uncheck the "activate automatically" box during the install. After its installed and booted up then activate it and enter your key.

That should fail with upgrade media. That's why I said double install. Or do it that way but use the phone to activate it. (That's what I did when I used my CD and forgot how to do it.)

its worked every single time on over a dozen installs for me, always with upgrade media. I've always done windows that way, just because there is no reason to activate it till I have it setup how I want. Tricks have never been necessary. But yes there are other options if it doesn't work.

1. Do a clean install at boot without checking the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online box during the installation process.

2. When the installation is finished, then manually activate Windows 7 with your product key number.

3. If your Windows should fail to activate, then pick up at step 2 in OPTION THREE below.

When I use the disk in my family pack of Win7, #3 happens every time. The family pack is an upgrade disk. If I ever have to reinstall I'll try unchecking that box, but I don't see how that will make a difference. It's worth a shot, though using the phone isn't that bad.

Thanks to all for the advice. I will perform a clean install from my Windows 7 disc and then manually activate. That is a lot easier than installing XP and then Windows 7.
