Budget for CPU + Mobo (ONLY NEED <)$400.

Both need to be VT-D or AMD Equivalent:/ supported.

Micro/ mini atx/itx preferred :. I want to keep this build small. i plan to use corsair carbide air case

I cant seem to find a good combo that support these features. anyone?

More PCI express x1 slots = better. just want the best bang for buck. xen or esxi will be installed on this, for testing purpose and misc stuff :).

The asrock z97 extreme 4 offers 6 pcie slots in total. As you may sli, that leaves 4 running at x1 mode for various stuff. Then, to my knowledge there are no boards that fit into the $300 budget and provide more than 6 pcie slots. There's the msi z68 big bang mashal with 8 or 10 pcie slots, but it wouldn't really make sense getting an older and more expensive cpu just for more pcie slots, I guess. As h97 boards generally don't offer as many slots, might as well take an overclockable cpu, which would result in: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($299.98 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard...

I7 4790k plus z97 board. I don't particularly know a mini/micro atx/itx one, though. However, a xeon e3-1231v3 with b85 or h97 board would certainly do the trick while being a better performance/$ deal. That is assuming you have a dedicated gpu. If not, the I7 4790k should be your choice. Non k I7's only cost $10 less than the I7 4790k.

ok. take micro / mini out of the equation. What chipset / mobo atx would you recommend exactly?.
Dedicated gpu is no problem i have a couple spare laying around.

overclock or not. bang for buck $400.
Id like to put 2 nics in this build. and a dedicated gpu with onboard. but i can take without onboard in exchange for a sli type deal.

Being slightly over budget, though. Without SLI and with only 4 pcie slots total, you could also take:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($242.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus H97-PLUS ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($95.99 @ SuperBiiz)

But the xeon has no iGPU and on h97 boards you can't sli (crossfire works though).
