With that build I really hope you'll be video editing too or else the i7 and 16GB RAM is just pointless.
Now for your questions:
- Storm Trooper does seem over the top no? You could downscale to a mid tower that performs just as good. My suggestion would be a Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 or a Corsair 400R. Cheaper and does the job.
- 650W PSU is pretty much the sweet spot for that system. It'll work very well for you, don't worry about that. Also the fact that it's 80+ Gold means you'll save a bit on Energy Consumption Costs. Good choice.

As for the GPU question:
Both the Gigabyte and MSI 970 are great options for non-reference cards. The Gigabyte one though has higher base AND boost clock speeds so you can pretty much get more out of...

If this is just a gaming rig, get an i5-4XXX. An i7 will be underused and cost you more in power. If you plan on getting another 970 for SLI later, most people suggest at least a 750W PSU. The MSI and Gigabyte cards vary per individual card. Both are good brands and have various advantages like clock speeds, cooling systems, software support, looks, etc. Just pick one based on how much you can spend and if you plan to overclock or not (Gigabyte has better OC in this case with their gaming series).

It also has a backplate which makes it look a tad better and improves its structure stability. The only advantages I see for the MSI is that it's a shorter card.

Just check which one is cheaper. And yes, both cards will fit on the Storm Trooper, 400R, and Arc Midi R2. In case you'll ask.

I guess if you have the money for it it'll be alright I guess. But you really shouldn't have any problem at all just going for an i5 4690K. You'll probably upgrade in max 4 years, right? I bet no games would fully utilize the hyperthreading abilities of the i7 even then.

But I see everything else are all good, if not great, options so I'm not really sure where else you can focus your money on. If you really want that i7, I say the heck with it if you got the cash, go for it brah. :p
