Is it possible to have one server that can stream media and file share?

This is probably a stupid question, but I've never set a server up and I need some guidance. I started out wanting just a media server (using Plex or something similar). But I also want to be able to upload/download files from my server (maybe using Filezilla or something similar). Is it possible to have both capabilities coming from one server?

Sure, any recent computer (Core 2 Duo and up) will have enough resources for what you want to do, especially for only one or a few people that will be accessing it. More RAM is good, 8 gig should be enough, also a fast hard drive. If you can, setup a RAID 5 with 3 or more drives, that will keep everything flowing smoothly if you do several things at one time with it and will give you some protection from a drive failure in addition to watever backups you will be doing.

Sure you can.

Assuming you want to be able to add new media over the network, all you need is to enable file sharing. Alternatively, install Filezilla server for FTP access outside of your local network.

For streaming videos, try Universal Media Server. It should be fine for any device that supports DLNA (most smart TVs, and also networked media players).

What you need to do is to simply use the same folders for your DLNA server library and sharing (or FTP for that matter). That will allow you to transfer new media files into the folder and have the DLNA server pick them up for transcoding.
