Super Budget Plex Server HTPC solution?

Hi - first question here!

I'm looking to build a tiny/silent-as-possible HTPC that will be running Plex Media Server. I'm not looking to stream outside the LAN, and the most concurrent streams will be 2 - it will pretty-much just be use to stream to one system at a time (either PS4, PS3, or Chromecast).

I'll connect it direct to the router (Asus N66U), and admin it remotely (suggestions for Remote Desktop/VLC solutions would be a help too).

I really want to spend as little as possible, what with Christmas and our Wedding being recent expenditure(!)

Sorry for the big ask, but I could really use some pointers/build specs :)

Thanks!

EDIT: Apologies, I should have mentioned it needs to be able to transcode upto 1080, but as said before will only be serving one stream at a time, 2 absolute maximum.

I don't think you could do real time transcoding on a Raspberry. But that wasn't in your original request... A commercial NAS from Qnap or Synology can do everything you want and is admin accessed via WEB. Another thread I just was in, the OP decided on a TS-251 from Qnap. Here is a review ...

Ah, sorry about that - I've edited my original Question.

The TS-251 looks perfect, and is pretty much an all-in-one solution.. Is that the absolute, bargain-basement solution available to me, or can I sink lower? :)

I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty for the sake of saving some hard-earned pennies :)

I appreciate the pointers so far kane, lets hope someone can recommend some dirt cheap build specs..

More power to you. I am just not a fan of creating a science project out of something I want to work. I have only commercial NAS solutions at my house...
