Symptom: I get random lock up & reboots with this new rig I am building for a friend. Sometimes it will post BSOD text, other times it will not. I've ran and tested the GPU with FurMark and Unengine Valley- no problems, I've done CPU stress tests with Prime95 and I have tested the RAM with Memtest86. The CPU is not overclocked and BIOS is set to default.

At first, I believed the culprit was a stick of RAM that may have been faulty, but it clearly does not appear to be that issue at all. If it helps, the BSOD occurs especially when browsing/explorering and transferring files and randomly too- does not occur under any stress tests. I have tested two versions of windows and they both have this issue.

I will post the minidump file but it's popping up with ntoskrnl.exe

Here are the basics-

  • ASUS M5A78L-M/USB
    ELPIDA PC3-10600U-9-10-B0 2GBx3
    XFX Radeon R9 290x
    AMD FX 6350
    Corsair CX750W PSU
    WD Caviar Green 1.3TB

I am suspicious that it may have something to do with the hard drive as it was part of the old computer. I'm installing another instance of Windows on my SSD to confirm that.

I did try to eliminate a potentially faulty stick but the results varied too much for me to make a conclusion. In the end, I was still only randomly rebooting regardless of what stick/what configuration of sticks were in.

Just an update; I am transferring files from my SSD back up to my C: HDD in Safemode without issue. Doing this normally would have caused the computer to reboot a few minutes in. Not sure if this is helpful.
