I have a normal laptop that works fine for me, but my mom has a really old one (couple years old) and it's running extremely slow in my opinion. It's an Asus EEE pc 1000HD with 1 Gigabyte of RAM (DDR2 SODIMM 667Mhz PC2-5300), Intel Celeron M 353 at 900 Mhz and some integrated graphics card which I don't remember now but it's really bad overall... The thing is, she is doing all those virus scans and defrags almost every day (a bit extreme in my opinion but whatever) with two antivirus programs. Free version of Avast and purchased Advanced System Care...

I disabled some of the graphical settings in Windows XP but that didn't help much, tommorow I plan on going through her files and removing old clutter which the defrag doesn't remove. Other thing which might lag, is that she has about 200 bookmarks in her web browser which may or may not add up to the slow processing of the computer. I cannot upgrade it because she is too scared it will "break" so that's out of the question... I also plan on getting a cooling pad for both of our laptops and I'm not sure if that's going to fix anything or just make things worse.
By the way her system is Windows XP Home... It's past midnight here so sorry if something doesn't make sense, I will check tommorow and reply if needed... Thanks for any help suggested :)
//After done edit= she doesn't have a battery plugged in because the battery got cooked while we were on a holiday in Greece couple years back so she is just plugging her computer in the supply.

Solution
Backup her files and favorites and restore the system to factory defaults with the recovery partition.

Old files just sitting there and bookmarks will not affect speed at all. It's just a slow computer and I'm sure after use by a non-computer savy person it's filled with spyware and viruses, toolbars for the web browser and a ton of "speed up my PC" programs that slow it down more than do anything else.

A netbook will never feel fast even when new and with a clean setup.
"but my mom has a really old one (couple years old)"

A couple of years does not qualify as "really old" at all, far from it.

Get rid of Advanced System Care, you don't need it or any other similar software - - waste of money and a big con.

Defragging almost every day is way too excessive and will achieve nothing except lead to early failure of the hard drive.

Back up all important data and test the hard drive with diagnostic software which loads from a bootable CD.
Try SeaTools for DOS. Download the CD image from here: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Create the bootable CD from the image using ImgBurn: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Then boot the laptop from that CD to run the SeaTools test on the hard drive (choose the Long/Extended test).

I have the exact same unit. It was on sale in 2009 so it is fairly old now.

Use CCleaner (crap cleaner), but be timid with the settings until you understand exactly what it is clearing out.

Max out the RAM memory!

If it isn't too much of a cost, purchase a solid state hard drive and either clone the old drive onto that or format it and start from scratch (better choice) with a new install. This works great for speeding things up on an otherwise older machine.

I still use XP on that machine as well, so do a google search for "Windows XP registry hack security updates" (withOUT quotes) to keep getting Microsoft's security updates now that XP is no longer supported for us normal users.

Making an older machine run faster, other than adding more memory and newer components, is all about running clean and lean. GET RID OF EXCESS CRAP! :)

Get rid of one of the resident virus checkers and only use a second one "on demand" (like Malware Bytes".

Get rid of any old programs that are not being used... And this is not a game machine so get rid of games especially!

Get rid of any startups that are not necessary... like utilities that look for program updates and simply keep a calendar of when to manually update programs. Utilities that run in the background are the biggest problem with slow computers. Run MSConfig to deselect those startup programs. Google search for processes that are listed but that you don't know what they do. Maybe you can deselect them, maybe not.

Get rid of fun yet unnecessary browser addons. Browser scripts are the other huge hogs that slow down computers. Remember, when we are saying the computer is slow, it often is simply because the person has a slow experience BROWSING!

Download and run Kaspersky's TDSKiller which MAY find rootkits that the average virus checker can't even see.

If a regular hard-drive, defrag regularly but not daily. A solid state unit does not benefit from defragging. In fact it uses its own algorithms to make sure that the bits are used evenly.

Start with all of that.

btw... I can't stand that touchpad. I use a mouse and select a box in the mouse/input utility to deactivate the pad whenever a mouse is attached. Works great! No more cursor mysteriously moving because of the palm of my hand touching the pad.

Good luck!
