Thinking about upgrading from my GTX 670's

To begin, my current pc specs

GPU- GTX 670 sli
CPU- i5-3570k(stock speed)
motherboard-z77 extreme 6
Ram- 16gb of G.Skill 1866hz gddr3
HDD- 250gb samsung ssd(I believe 840 evo), 2tb hybrid hard drive, 1tb Caviar black
Case- NZXT Switch 810
PSU- Corsair 850 watt(I don't know many more details sorry, it's not modular)
CPU Cooler- Hyper 212+(I plan on upgrading soon, but this does fine atm)
Display- I game on a 1920x1080p monitor, however, I do plan on upgrading to a 1440p or 4k monitor so hopefully the Graphics cards I get can handle something like crisis 3 maxed at 60fps steady.

you may be asking yourself why I want to upgrade from gtx 670 sli while playing on a 1920x1080p monitor, the reason being that I have been experiencing rather massive micro stuttering in any game that actually forces the cards past a collective 80% usage, which, is unbearably annoying. Because of this I have decided to sell the 670's and upgrade.

I am currently perplexed, all help and suggestions are welcome.

note: My question in short is whether or not the GTX 980 sli has micro stuttering issues or if there is a better single card solution that can get me 60fps steady in games such as crysis 3 maxed out.

note2: Due to a lack of adaptive v-sync in AMD cards I would prefer to stay with Nvidia.

Thank you very much for any help you can give! :D

Solution
Well your 670s in SLI are exactly the same as a GTX 690. For a single card, the GTX 980 would be your only option for a performance upgrade. I could see you selling your cards and getting some nice stutter-free gaming on a custom GTX 980 like the Galax Hall of Fame or Gigabyte G1.
(Also, nice to see you call out Adaptive VSync, it rarely gets mentioned as a positive, but is actually pretty indispensable if you use VSync at all.)

Solution
I have similar - 2 x 670s. They run well. I have a Corsair TX750 non modular PSU. You've probably got a TX as well.

When I feel a bit more financial I plan to get a gtx970 and sell me 2 670s. Then later I'll get another 970. That should keep me happy for another few years.

I see, I have been looking at the GTX Titan, that would give about the same performance(maybe a little better?) however on a single card so stutter free. However $1000 is a lot to drop on a card that I may not see much of a performance increase from. Due to this GTX 980sli does sound very tempting, from what I have read(http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_980_sli_review,19.html) It seems as though I would be able to get a massive increase in performance even if I upgraded my monitor. The review I linked also claims that the GTX 980 sli has little micro-stuttering(not noticeable). Do you have any other info on whether or not the micro-stuttering is more than/less than the gtx 670's, as well as whether or not it is noticeable.

note: I am very meticulous when I game, for the most part I notice the slightest stutter/screen tear(why I love adaptive vysnc, and also why I am thinking of upgrading to a g-sync capable monitor) so please shoot the GTX 980 sli down if Stuttering is in any way an issue.

(thanks for the quick reply, it's been a rather long time since I've been on the toms hardware forum, I nearly forgot how quick to respond and friendly the community is. :) )

You really seem like the perfect candidate for a G-Sync monitor. I don't really see the 980s in SLI being any more or less prone to stuttering than your 670s. They don't have any special built-in technology beyond what the 670s have in terms of frame pacing/smoothing.

Yeah, G-Sync is certainly appealing to me; however, it seems to be very expensive and has few options atm so I guess I will need to deal with adpative vysnc(though it really is great I feel) until there are either more options and it's less expensive(forgive my ignorance if what I just said is completely false, I have not done a lot of research on G-Sync lately so kinda talking out of my a** :p)

Do you have any recommendations on what card could provide the best performance? My main goal is to be able to play Crysis 3 maxed at 60fps... if this is even possible with a single GPU I don't know, but if it's not I might have to stick with my 670's :(

I want to play at 1920x1080p and maxed out, so the 980 is perfect; however, I plan on upgrading my monitor to 2560x1440 which is why I am a bit iffy on getting the 980...

note: it seems that one gtx 980 would work pretty well for what I want, when I upgrade to 1440p then i'll potentially get another 980, though I hope there is a better single gpu solution by then.
