I am upgrading my pc ...I have an old 1x4gb ram in it and I am gonna buy a 1x8gb ram(they both r not same companies)... So I wanna know will they link together to give me 12gb ram????...pls help thx..:)

depends on the ram. does it run at the same voltage, speeds and timings?.

get cpu-z and run it.
look at the ram timings tab.
you will see 3 or 4 sets of numbers (if its branded ram), relating to the rams latency and speeds.
on unbranded normally theres only 1 set of timings.
write these down in and compare them to the new ram. if 1 or more sets of timings matches you should be able to run both. (but with limitation)

if the latencies dont match it will very much depend on the quality and speeds of the ram as to whether they will work together.
mix and matching stresses the mem controller so in some cases it can lead to damage of the ram, the mem controller or both.

your best bet would be to get another 4 gig of the same ram you already have or get 2x8 gig of the new stuff. you will get the benefit of dual channel operation (limitation of running unmatched pairs is single channel only).
