X99 Realtek HD...any way to upconvert 2 channel to 5.1??

Hi all. Having some trouble w/ onboard audio on my new motherboard. I used to use my Titanium HD in my old setup. My problem is I like the "virtual surround" I get from 2 channel sources (Youtube music, ect). With onboard Realtek HD, I don't get anything out of the rear or center channels, on L/R and subwoofer using 2 channel sources. I had it originally connected via Optical SPDIF to my Logitech Z-680s. Only tried a couple games using this setup, Dead Space and BF4 worked fine, but no surround in Alien Isolation though I attributed that to a bug as other people had the same gripe. I tried using DTS:connect, no change. When set to optical output in sound manager, no speaker config. options are available. After some google investigating, I read that it could be the Optical cable/config w/ realtek causing the problem. However, same optical setup, same speakers w/ my Titanium HD worked fine. Anyways, I've since switched to the 3 3.5mm analog setup. Now using analog 3-wire setup, I can adjust speaker arrangement. Speaker test works fine for all speakers. I tried Alien Isolation, now surround is working great :). However, still no upcoverting of 2 channel stereo Youtube to surround. I tried DTS:Connect again and the DTS Ultra PC II settings to no avail. Is this setup possible w/ Realtek 1150? I'm using Windows 8.1 now vs. Windows 7 before upgrade if that matters. I'm just curious if this is a Realtek/Software issue or a setting that I'm missing. I'm saying this as like I mentioned earlier my X-Fi HD worked fine in full surround for all games that I played plus upconverting Youtube music. I'd reinstall the card, but won't fit now, GPU Multi-Link blocking slots :)

May have found my own answer of sorts. After looking more into these features of my Realtek 1150 on my motherboard, this could be due to design. It's looking like the upconversion of 2.1 to 5.1 is more or less a "simulated" 5.1 out of only 2 speakers, not actually pushing 2.1 sound through 5 actual speakers. Headphones is where i'm thinking this is meant to be used. There must have been some software setting for my X-Fi, that forced sound through all my speakers. Does this seem to be the case? I can't seem to find a whole lot of information otherwise.
