Hello,

This is my first time seeking help personally from this form but always come here to find solutions - love this forum!

I am going to rebuild my current PC with a reinstall of windows to completely start fresh. My components include:

Intel i7 2700K
8 GB RAM
1TB Western Digital Black Caviar HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN 3 Motherboard
Crucial SSD 60GB paired with Intel Rapid Storage Technology

I have already purchased one Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD and another Intel 530 Series 80GB to be added into my "new" system.

How I would like to set my system up would be to wipe the Crucial SSD and keep it for caching though Intel Rapid Storage Technology; use the 80GB SSD as my Windows boot drive; the 480GB SSD as my games drive with the remaining 1TB HHD for anything else.

I had a few questions regarding this build.

First, how do i go about wiping my current Crucial SSD? I cannot access it currently because it doesn't appear as a drive on my machine. And to follow this questions, how do I go about updating the firmware?

Second, does anyone have any recommendations on how to install the storage drives? Should I unplug all drives except the 80GB SSD for Windows, then install Windows + drivers; then plug in 60 SSD to set up Intel Rapid Storage Technology; then install 480GB and 1TB HDD with Raid 0? Again, how do I load the latest firmware for the SSDs?

Lastly, is there such thing as flashing motherboard and graphics cards etc to act like they are brand new out of the box? Is this necessary? And should I bother updating BIOS/Motherboard firmware when everything is installed?

Sorry for all the questions, I really appreciate the help and if I have missed anything please let me know.

Thank you again,

Daniel

I'll try to advise you in the best way I know.

Question 1: As for the Crucial SSD, I'd say for updates and whatnot, check the crucial website. If it's not appearing on your machine, sometimes a trip into the BIOS will reveal the drive or Device Manager can sometimes help as well by scanning for new devices. I've always read that keeping up with hardware updates is very important. Crucial seems to be a reputable brand, they should have updates ready for download on their site for that SSD.

Question 2: As for installing everything, I'd say just as you said, set everything up one at a time. Do one, then add the next, etc.

Question 3: You can flash a motherboard but I'm not so sure you need to. As for the graphics card, I don't really...

As for the graphics card, I don't really know, but I'm sure it's not needed as I've had cards for years and never done anything but update the drivers. Back to the motherboard bit, I'd say check Asus' site and download the LATEST BIOS. It'll have all the most recently added goodies, and sometimes fixes for certain issues. I'd say make that your first step, as your BIOS actually gets updated on your motherboard, not your hard drive.
