Apps can just be re-downloaded from the play store. You will associate the new phone with your Google login and then in the play store go to "my apps" and then instead of "installed" go to "all". That will show you all the apps you have EVER downloaded. Just download the ones you want. Even paid for apps are listed and can be re-downloaded. Your contacts can be sync'ed through Google also.
Some application data can be hard to transfer. Use Google drive as an intermediate. Text messages were difficult when I upgraded.
