Hi. I have a perfectly working PC which has the following Specs

Intel Dual Core E5700 @ 3.00GHz
Asus P5G41T-M LX motherboard
1333Mhz 1x2GB DDR3 Ram

I bought a new Transcend 4GB 1333mhz ram (TS512MLK64V3) as an upgrade. But it does not seem to work with my mobo. PC works perfectly with the old 2GB ram, but it doesn't even boot with the new 4GB stick installed. Windows detects only 2GB if I install both.

The new ram seems to work fine, as Speccy and CPU ID can detect it. But it does not show up in Windows. I tried resetting the CMOS (by taking away the CMOS battery for 15 minutes) but it does not work too.

My old 2GB ram had chips on both side (128Mx8) and the new 4GB Ram has chips on single side (512Mx8) will that be a problem?

I can change my RAM if its not compatible. But please advice me about the type of Ram I should buy.

Solution
The chip should be compatible. All the specs are within the motherboards stated requirements. Since 1333mhz modules are only supported on the board by (OC) it might be necessary to install the module and then manually set it's profile in the BIOS.

It also states it supports both single sided and double sided modules. You may just have a bad module. The motherboard QVL list shows support only up to 2GB modules for listed Transcend model numbers, but that may not mean much since most boards don't list all compatible memory on the list. In fact, they usually show only a few of the actual model numbers.

Make absolutely certain that you are fully seating the module and that it is installed in the A1 slot closest to the CPU.

Can you help me in setting the profile in BIOS? Should I change the DRAM frequency or adjust the voltage or something like that? I perfectly placed the ram in the slot close to the cpu and the problem persists.

One more thing, don't know if it helps. tRAS, tRC values of both the rams are different.

The first thing I would do is make sure the BIOS is up to date. The most recent version is 1101. Many times this solves issues with memory and other hardware compatibility immediately.

The manual for your motherboard say the latecy timings have to be the same to use the modules together so you might not be able to use the two modules together unless you set the CAS latency for both modules the same in the BIOS.

Try this. With both modules installed go into the BIOS and reset to optimal or default settings, save settings and restart. Go back into the BIOS and see if both memory modules are listed at their correct settings.

By the way, what version of windows are you running and is it 32 or 64 bit? If you have 32bit windows it's not going to recognize more than about 3.5GB total no matter how much is actually installed. I know that doesn't explain why the single module isn't allowing the system to post but it might be important anyhow.

I'm using 64bit Windows7 and updated with the latest BIOS. And I just found something. Though my mobo can overclock the ram, Transcend says that the model I bought does not support my mother board. So, I am going to exchange the ram with another one and revert you back if it works. Thank you for guiding me all this time.

That list doesn't mean anything. The model you're running in there already probably isn't on there. As I already said up above, the QVL list does NOT mean anything. It does NOT mean the memory is incompatible. All it means is that they had not tested that exact model number by the time they decided to stop adding tested part numbers to the list. It is VERY doubtful based on the specs for the memory you bought that it wouldn't work. I did think of another issue however.

Your board may not support two different modules when used in OC as the 1333mhz shows that you are. You may have to manually set the speed for both modules to 1066mhz and 1.5v in the BIOS for them to work together. Looking at some other threads it might also be likely that your board simply WON'T use two modules that are different and getting another module that matches either of the modules you have may be necessary.

I didn't mean the QVL of my mobo. I just checked in the transcend website that says that the other model of their module works in my board. And the model I bought was not on their list. So I wanted to try that model.

I am ready for the manual configuration. But the boot screen confuses me a bit.

Configure system frequency screen has the following

AI Overclocking - Auto
DRAM Frequency - 800MHz

Memory voltage - Auto
NB Voltage - Auto
VIT Voltage - Auto
CPU Ccore - Auto
Auto PSI - Enabled

Though I can set the Memory voltage to 1.5V, I couldn't change the DRAM frequency independently. I have the set the AI Overclocking to manual and set the CPU Frequency which automatically changes the DRAM frequency. So, what should I change in these? I am ready to test many times with different settings. But will it cause any problem to the main board or the module?

I can buy another 4gb module if the single module works fine.

This shows how to make the proper adjustments possible:

Hi,

I tried the steps you had given with different settings. All made the system unstable and didn't make the ram work. Instead the computer stopped at boot screen saying that overclock is not working and prompted me to reset to default settings.

Before confusing you more, I contacted a local service engineer. He said that my board only supports modules that have chips on both sides. So, I exchanged the Transcend 4gb 1R 512Mx8 with Dynet 4gb 2R 256x8. I couldn't find any other branded company providing 4gb that has chips on both side.

I tried it now and it works! Windows can now find 6GB ram installed. But still I wonder why the single sided ram didn't work while its clearly mentioned in the manual that both single and double sided ram works.

I don't get it either. Generally when the product manual indicates both types of modules are compatible, they are. It may have had more to do with the configuration of the chips that the fact they were double sided. I'm glad you got it working now though. Sorry it wasn't an easier process. Sometimes, with older hardware especially, it's simply a roll of the dice on what works and what doesn't regardless that you follow the outlined specifications.

I have a similar problem too! On this asus i have installed a e6550 and 2 gb of ram 1600mhz from kingmax! When i'm trying to add 4gb of ram won't even start and i have to set ram freq at 800mhz in bios, but boots into windows and the aditional 4gb ram aren't active! Speccy shows it to me,but it looks like isn't there!
