Question towards SSDs.

I have been thinking of getting an SSD, but primarily as a boot function. Is this possible, without having to do anything to my original HDD? The question more than likely sounds dumb, but it would be reassuring to know whether it is actually possible, to use it as a boot partition, but keep using the HDD as main storage, without formatting it or anything.

Thanks.

Solution
There is software to clone the operating system and other OS stuff (registry, etc) from one drive to another, but again, that would still leave a copy of all the OS files on the original drive.

you can do it that way you'd have to install the OS on the SSD and make sure to flag it in the bios as the boot drive. Its a good idea to disconnect the HDD if your going to do this to make sure nothing happens to the data on it. The only issue you'll run into if you do it this way is having unneeded windows files on your HDD wasting space and you'd have to reinstall most programs drivers and the like from scratch

So, if i were to do this, and set the SSD as the boot drive, there should be no issues?
Also, what kind of space would I need the SSD to contain, about 100GB?

If you're doing OS only, you can generally get away with as little as 40-80GB depending on the OS and such. As long as your motherboard supports SSDs from the BIOS, which I can never remember the term from, you should be able to boot from it.

Is there a way to tell whether my motherboard supports SSD booting? Its actually quite crappy. (Asus P8H77-M LE)
Sorry if this is becoming a bother, but it'd be good to get it sorted sooner than later.

SSDs are generally supported the same as mechanical hard drives the only setting I can think he would be trying to mention is AHCI which gives a performance boost on newer drives that support it which all SSDs should. Your using a newer UEFI motherboard so I can't see you having any issues and its not a bother at all.
