Hello there Tom's Hardware community. I believe you are one of the most qualified communities to help a user with his purchases on Computer parts.

My current computer is 3 years old, a bit upgraded, but still old. The current parts will be listed bellow. I was wondering if i should keep upgrading my current one, or go ahead and buy a new one. Please consider that the computer will be used not only for Gaming but also for Program Development (Java, PHP, C#, VB e.t.c), Video Editing and probably Game Development. I am 16 years old, and unfortunatly our schools do not yet "promote" or "teach" Programing, Video Editing and/or Game Development so i have to do all of these at home, and without anyones guidance.
I would enjoy if you could share some knowledge to me about what parts should i upgrade to, and if the ones i have selected are good enough or which ones could make it even better on the same buget.

Old Computer:

  • CPU Intel Core i7 2600 @3.4GHz
    MB Gigabyte H67MA-USB3-B3
    RAM 8GB DDR3 (4x2GB 667Hz)
    Graphics NVIDIA GTX 770

If upgrade, these are the parts that i would probably get

  • MB Gigabyte H97-HD3
    CPU Intel Core i7 4790
Remove 1 of the Dual DDR3 of the "Old Computer" and add DDR3 Corsair 4GB Dimm 1333MHz XMS3
And finally add an SSD 120GB Sata III for speed (Old computer has 1TB HDD)

If i should buy a new one, these are the parts that i would go for.

  • CASE Obsidian Series 900D
MB Gigabyte X99-UD4 or X99s Gaming 7 (64GB Ram max->128GB Ram max for the future).
    CPU Intel Core i7-5930K
SSD Samsung 1TB Sata III 850 Pro
HDD WD PURPLE SATA III 4TB 64MB
RAM DDR4 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 2400MHz Elite (x2) [Which leaves me with 4 open ram spaces for future upgrades]
PSU Corsair ATX 1200W 80+ Platinum Modula
    CPU Cooler Corsair Hydro H100i

Yes, i am aware of that the price difference and performance would be huge between the upgrade and purchasing a new one.

Here is my issue though. Technology sells fasts, and is being upgraded even faster every day. Those parts will be cheaper month by month, year by year. Purchasing such an expensive Computer is an overkill for a kid, i know. It is mostly a huge Gamble since i am not aware how soon the prices will drop, since it is random. Although, i hope that the new computer would stick with me for atleast 4 Years or even more. And help me improve my skills on Program Development which i already self-tought me some, and even expand those skills to video-editing, image editing,3d Object creations and Game Development.

What are you ideas uppon these? Also this computer in my Country Costs around 3.500 Euros (Greece) although i could find the same parts on other stores like TigerDirect and Ebay for quite cheaper (Currently 2.500€ is the lowest i could find, which is quite a difference).

Happy new year everyone.
I hope your wishes and dreams come true.
Kind regards,

I would suggest getting a new PC since you are going to be doing video editing etc. You don't need a 1200 watt unless you plan to do multi GPU configs later on.As for the 900D it's a Giant case are you sure you can accommodate such large case?

Ooops best solution'ed by mistake while trying to reply.
I have enough space on the floor to put that case. I can't though levitate it on a table. Any Base recommended for such business?

also dont spend so much on faster ram 1600-1866 are both fine just get the one that is cheaper

16GB is perfect for what you are doing u wont need more

imo if u want to save money go for a GTX970sli/GTX980 + 16GB of 1600/1866 Ram

if u want a new PC the X99 Platform is also fine

imo any Strong CPU with a GTX970 or above will do you fine plus the 16gb of ram

I was thinking of keeping the GTX770. I mean, 770 does its job quite fine. I don't think i will require a Graphics card upgrade. As for the ram, since clock time on DDR4 is quite big compared to the DDR3 (16-16-16[DDR4] -> 9-9-9[DDR3]) Wouldn't more Hz increase performance? Also i believe that 2400 is the lowest amount of DDR4 They are offering right now on that specific market in Greece :)

Edit: Question: If i wanted to add both GTX770 & GTX970 At the same time would that be possible?

It will be possible, but you won't be able to use them at the same time, not like you can do SLI with them.
However if you are going to edit videos and would like to render in the background, you can tell Sony Vegas to use the 1st (970) or 2nd (770) to use for rendering. You could also set the affinity on the cpu cores so you can still play some games or do other stuff. Keep in mind the power usage though, it is still extra watts drawn.
