Hello all,

Router: Netgear, N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router, WNDR4500
Internet: Unlimited BT Infinity 2, up to 76mb speed

I live in a house with 6 people and easily over 20 devices total. Our internet speed is fine during peak times and when we are all using our devices (Gaming, streaming), However When the wired computers are downloading or pulling allot of activity the WiFi cuts off and no one on phones/ laptops/tablets can get connection (while the wired devices are fine).

So after searching the internet i have found that it is likely the cause of the router "not being able to handle" the load. (like i say the WiFi only drops out when downloading)

I am wondering what people can suggest for replacing the current router as there is so many types. We need one that can support wireless and wired connection (preferably more then 4 Ethernet ports) which will not cut off when under load.

Thanks for all the help in advance and happy new year! :)

There is no way to be SURE of that since we really don't have a root cause... Have you done a factory reset, and verified you have the current firmware on the existing router? Do you have QoS or any traffic management enabled? The factory reset will clear all that out. If a factory reset clears the problem...

You won't find much (if any) selection of home routers with more than 4 ethernet ports. You should just add a switch to augment the wired connectivity.
Even if you only have wireless N devices, you could step up to an AC router. Still compatible and has more CPU. Maybe something like the Netgear R7000.

Thanks for the reply, i suppose i will have to pick up a switch too. Would an AC router fix the WiFi blackouts?

If a factory reset clears the problem you need to investigate what other type of config changes had been made ...
