I am thinking about overclocking my 5820k to 4.0ghz. I am wondering if that would be worth the time to do or would I be better off leaving it at stock? Also I am wondering how long I would need to run a stress test on the CPU after? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Solution

you can easily set to 4.2GHZ with 1.1Vcore.

Well that's why I was wondering if it would be worth doing or not. I didn't really think I needed to, but I thought it would be worth asking.

In my opinion it isn't really worth it

Would you recommend using the OC function on the motherboard or doing a manual overclock? Also I was looking at the Asrock x99 fatality x motherboard. Any opinions on that board?

Do a manual overclock, set ratio at 42 and CPU Vcore at 1.1.

here are my results on 4.2GHZ

I don't know about motherboard. I have MSI X99S. It was cheapest on the market. But I haven't had any problem with it yet.
managed to overclock to 4.7 with 1.255(not stable on stress test but enough to run benchmarks).
Yours should do just as well.

P.S. what RAM do you have?

I have 16gb GSkill ram at 2400mhz.

Could you please run Maxxmem benchmark?
I'd really like to see how it performs. Mine had terible results even on 2666MHZ, 11-11-11-31 Timings. I have Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4

Okay I will have to do that. I have one other question. I have heard that overclocking can shorten the life span of a CPU. Will that happen in this situation? I may only overclock to 4.0ghz or the 4.2 you recommended.

nope, that's a myth. CPU degrades only if it works on extremely high temperatures(80-90°C+) for a long time.
Even mid end cooling system can hold your CPU cool at 4.2GHZ. So you don't have to worry about anything.

Check Core temperatures while stress testing.
