Hey everyone, i just bought a new house which is wired for ethernet ahead of time. There is network box in my basement where the coax comes in from the street and where all the different rooms meet. I am trying to setup my house so that the wifi access point can be broadcast from the family room. Here is my current setup that is not working...

Coax from street > modem > 5 port unmanaged switch

From that switch I connect all the different rooms (family room/office/bedroom). The wireless router which is a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH is connected to the family room port which works just fine. I am able to get wifi on my iphone ipad etc. However when I try to plug a windows 8 lenovo into the office port it just constantly tries to "identify" the network and shows as no internet access. What have I done wrong here? If i take that same computer and plug it into a port on the back of the router (in the family room) everything works just fine and I have access....HELP!

Yeah, unless you have two cables run, it's not ideal.

If you really know what you're doing you can run 2 separate 100mbps 'cables' over a single physical cable, but that involves a lot of messing about and will limit you to 100mbps.

Failing that you'll need to get either a new access point to provide wireless, or get a new (non-wireless) router to manage the internet. If you go with the latter option you'll then need to turn off dhcp on your current router and connect the incoming cable to the LAN instead of WAN port.

Either will work just fine.
You need to connect the switch to the router not the other way around. It's the router that establishes the internet connection and provides the necessary services for devices to connect to the internet. That's why your wireless devices are working, but the wired ones aren't.

You need:
Coax from isp
Modem
Router WAN port
Switch (connected to router's LAN connections)

How you manage that with your cabling might be a challenge. Do you have 2 cables to your router? Otherwise you'll need a router where your switch is at present.

@rhysiam, okay although this will result in really poor wifi signal across the house, thats why i was trying to run the router behind the switch out of the family room. Should I instead buy a 2nd access point?

You can't go: modem -> switch -> router.
It must be: modem -> router -> switch.

thanks for the help everyone! i fully understand what must be done now. I think the option best for me is going to be buying a wired router and killing DHCP on the wireless router. Thank you!
