No operating system found due to broken hard drive?

Hi community. This is my first post after reading plenty of threads with similar or matching topics. If I am in the wrong category, please forgive me.

Here we go:

1) my laptop (Sager 8662, about 5 years old) was working fine until last night. The only notable issue was that the entire body of the laptop got fairly hot some times.

2) this morning, after having run all night, the laptop seems to have restarted over night only to leave the message "operating system not found".

3) in BIOS the hard drive (Seagate 320gb) was still mentioned and as the number one boot device

4) windows 8 diagnostics from the install DVD did not detect hard drive. No restore possible.

4) I booted with a Linux KNOPPIX USB and ran TestDisk from it. No hard drive detected!

5) I took the hard drive out of the laptop and put it into a different one. That laptop did not detect any hard drive in the BIOS.

6) I put a different hard drive into my laptop. The BIOS detected it fine. KNOPPIX as well. So it's not the motherboard or else.

6) the hard disk moves, makes no unusual noises or other indications that it could be physically broken.

Based on the above, it's pretty obvious the hard drive is toast. Or is there hope?
If it's toast, any chance I can get some data back?

Really appreciate your time.

the firmware controller board on the hard drive more than likely went bad. If you badly need the data (mission crit, lifesaving info, etc) you could send it in to a hard drive restorer. some warnings are recovery isn't 100% and its not cheap, as they repair in clean rooms with tools most people don't have access to.

what you could try (no guarantee) is put it in a usb enclosure.

or (I don't recommend this one but its worked for me in the past)

with another pc booted with ahci turned on open disk manager and then power the broken drive and then plug the data cable to the running system. if your lucky it will appear and you can get data off it.

Hello guys,

Here is an update:

1) I got a SATA-USB hard drive enclosure. I plugged it in a different computer and it spools up nicely. No audible malfunctions that lead me to believe that it is physically broken. Unfortunately, it is not recognized under Hard Disk Drives.

2) I checked in the disk manager as suggested. After plugging it in, a drive actually pops up but stating "Disk 1, not Initialized". Upon Right-click-properties, the correct name of the HDD is stated. Upon right-click-Initialze Disk, the choice between MBR and GBT is offered. When I click ok, an error message pops up "Virtual Disk Manager - Data error (cyclic redundancy check)".

3) I also booted once with KNOPPIX with the hard drive being plugged in and ran TestDisk. The hard drive is actually recognized now but with an incorrect capacity (500Gb rather than the correct 320Gb).

I am actually more confused now than I was before. Do you have any tip for me what to do next? Other than using a large hammer?
Thank you very much!
