How to allocate more RAM to Minecraft?

I have a decent laptop that can run Watch Dogs on High, so Minecraft should not be a problem, but the computer only allocates 512 MB of RAM to the game, witch makes my game unstable and laggy. I've tried to go into the edit profile tab and changed the JVM Arguments, but it crashes when i do. Is there any other way to allocate more RAM?

(Sorry for bad english, but it's my second language)

It says "Error occurred during initialization of VM"

Is your computer 32 bit or 64 bit and how much ram do you have in it.Try doing it to -Xmx1G -Xms1G in JVM Arguments

If your PC is 32bit (most likely not as you can run WatchDogs on High) you will be limited to a small amount of RAM, However if it is 64bit you can allocate as much as needed. I have 8GB RAM in total so I normally allocate about 3GB but around 2GB is recommend.

I have a 64 bit computer, but only 32 bit Java, may that be the problem?
