I swapped my old GPU on my PC with a GTX 970 and everything worked fine for the first few minutes. I started to install the new drivers and during the installation, my PC screen flashed black. There is a "ENG" flashing on the bottom right side of the screen which is likely indicating my keyboard input. There is also the Ethernet symbol on the bottom right side of the screen, showing I was plugged in using Ethernet. These two symbols are the only things displayed on the black screen and they appear and disappear about every second. I switched off the computer and boot it up again, and after the "HP" sign loads, the same thing described earlier happened. I removed new video card and put in my old one, and it works perfectly. My PSU is a Corsair AX760i. I won't be using this GTX 970 on my current PC as I will put it on a upcoming build. I just want to make sure the new video card does not have any hardware issues.

Solution
more than likely hp detected it then rejected it prebuilt are funny that way with there proprietary bios and what ever hp added to that its not that hard to look these things up

What a relief. From what you guys said, the new video card does not have any hardware issues. I will be putting this card in my new build and hope everything goes well. Thanks you a your quick replies!

What display connector do you have hooked up to your monitor? I've read some people had problems using 970s/980s when using Displayport causing intermittent hangs/black screens on boot. This was apparently fixed with the hotfix driver 344.80 driver pkg.

I used HDMI connection.

The HDMI connector is quite limited in bandwidth. You can only go up to 60Hz at 1920X1080. If you want faster frame rates or higher resolution you need to use the dual DVI or Display port.

OK ! encountered the same problem . Some one said from power supply ($160 buccks PSU outch! or send the card to MSI for an RMA . But finally i got it to solve problem
1. Uninstall all video drivers (including NVIDIA olds ones) with DDU aplication (download it) and uninstall on SAFE MODE very important and then reboot
2. Power down your pc and look in your mobo a PCI E 2.0 socket not 3.0 . I dont know why if i put the card on 3.0 socket the card crash constantly.
3.Install the lastest oficial aproved NVIDIA drivers (please not an beta versions)
4. Install your drivers auto or custom but remember to do a CLEAN instalation.
Now you are ready to install your Direct x or games .
My card are OC 75 mhz higher GPU and 300 mhz memory and auto fan and never crash with ugly black screen of death again.
Thats my contribution , thanks you! and happy gaming.
