Hi guys,

My EHDD started having random frequent bursts of "slowness" or "getting stuck". Some examples:
1) Browsing through the folder directories, when suddenly it takes like 5 seconds to open one folder, then it'd be fine, then it'd be slow again for another folder.
2) I could be watching a movie, and it would get "stuck" for like 5 seconds, and then it would resume again.
3) Copying files takes forever.

Here is the SMART results from HD Tune Pro:

I have a Western Digital Elements 2TB, and it was purchased in November 2010.

Is death imminent? Anything I can do?

I agree with digitaldoc, you shouldn't worry about creating bad sectors on the new drive as the bad sectors are most probably physical ones. You can either just drag and drop the data or use some back up utility. Keep in mind that it may take some time given the condition of your current drive.

Hi there sl___,

Your HDD has bad sectors on it. As digitaldoc already mentioned, you should back up your data as soon as possible.
You can't really stop this process and as the drive is considered to be unreliable, you may want to take another one.
After you've backed up your data, you can try formatting the drive or write zeros. This sometimes may slow down the dying process a bit. After that you can use it only for storing unimportant data.

Cheers,

Ah, that sucks... Thanks for the info guys. What's the best way to back-up a drive? Would this run the risk of any files creating bad sectors on a different drive when getting transferred over?
