Hey guys. I wasn't exactly sure how to title this post, so I'll go into detail.
I recently bought a USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE adapter as I have some old drives laying around and want to use them for storage.
I purchased: http://www.amazon.com/eFreesia%C2%AE-Converter-Activity-Support-EC-AHDD/dp/B00L1QH4T2
(As a side note, the above piece did not come with an AC adapter and I had to buy one separately. Well...I bought a cheaper yet similar item on clearance to use the AC adapter. I doubt that's relevant, but I'm adding it anyways.)
So, as my first project, I was give a hard drive from a family member's dying laptop to see if the files are salvageable (I believe they are). The drive is a 2.5" Seagate Momentus 5400.6 HDD. It uses SATA.
The drive powers on fine. The computer has recognized my adapter and correctly installed the drivers. However, it has attempted to install drivers for the drive as "USB Mass Storage Device" and has failed. I assume this means I need a different driver for the drive? But I'm not sure that is correct. I did not see any related drivers on Seagate's page.
I am unable to detect a new drive on My Computer and Disk Management only displays my system's drives.
So my question is what am I doing wrong and how do I fix it. Do I need a different set of drivers? Or is there another reason why the "USB Mass Storage Device" drivers fail?
EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm using Windows 7 64-Bit. My system does support USB 3.0 as well. Not sure what else would be relevant, but if more specs will help, I can provide.
EDIT 2: So, doing some more troubleshooting, I believe I have misidentified the issue.
As I said earlier I bought an older USB to IDE/SATA adapter because I needed the SATA power supply.
I figured, 'why not?' and decided to try to use it with the drive. Lo and behold, it works fine, I am able to read the drive.
So...I take it this means the issue is with my adapter. (Why not just use the working one? It's a USB 2.0. Push come to shove, I'll just be happy with it, but I have USB3 and want to use it lol).
This being said, any ideas?
Thank you for your help!
