BSOD during gaming (mostly when quitting games)

Hi All,

I have seem to run into quite a strange problem. I have recently got a new SSD installed so I put my Win 7 on it.
Since then I received 2 BSODs in almost the exact same situations and also sometimes there seem to be some freezing and stalling in games for extended periods of times.

The first BSOD happened when I clicked on "Quit" from the game The Crew and it pointed to my atikmdag.sys driver, so I reinstalled the Catalyst driver it and was ok for about a week.

Now I got another BSOD but this time when I quit a multiplayer match in Battlefield 4. Based on the dump, it seems to be the exact same driver causing the issue, but I'm kinda concerned now that it is rather a hardware problem than a software one.

Below are the summaries from BlueScreenView:

Thanks I just did that and also rolled back to a previous driver. Will see how it works, but as I said I did try driver reinstall already before and still got a BSOD.

I don't have Fraps or MSI Afterbuner installed at all. There is almost no other program running next to the games, definitely no performance enhancing/impacting software.

both bugcheck are bad address access from the graphics driver

normally you would update the driver and be sure to update the graphics drivers high definition audio driver. you can then disable it if you don't need it.

beyond that I would have to look at your memory .dmp file to see what is running on your system.
note: freezing / stalling can be cause by
old firmware on a SSD, outdated chipset drivers, if you a intel cpu install them directly from intel:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20775

you can also have issues with the high def audio driver use by your system: often you can go to windows device manager and find all the sound sources and disable all the sources that you don't have speakers connected to.

- incorrect overclocking can also be a cause of the delays. (signals are missed in the electronics)

it can also be a driver problem (deadlocks, but it take a bit of a effort to isolate the cause)

The SSD (Samsung 840 Evo 500GB) has the latest firmware, I used the latest AMD chipset drivers too. I also have an AMD FX 6300 CPU and I never overclock.

Here are the two dump files:

http://wikisend.com/download/453134/010215-14461-01.dmp

Thanks a lot in advance.

basically your graphics driver tried to write to a bad memory location (memory location zero)
and the system detected the attempt and bugchecked.

Normally you would update the driver directly from AMD.
but it could also be a result of memory corruption caused by another driver. I just don't know.
you have a driver installed:
\SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\atwgis3x.SYS Tue Sep 10 06:56:12 2013

any idea what it is? it does not show up on google or bing or in the list of drivers tables for windows.
generally that is a bad sign.

you might want to run driver verifier on your system if you can not figure out the problems:
http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/65331-using-driver-verifier-identify-issues-drivers.html

be sure to set your dump type from minidump to full or kernel dump in order to keep the debug info and have it saved to the memory dump on the next crash.

update Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC

Rt64win7.sys Tue Sep 27 07:50:33 2011
from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

this file has windows AMD CPU microcode updates:
\SystemRoot\system32\mcupdate_AuthenticAMD.dll Mon Jul 13 18:29:09 2009
it is pretty old, so it looks like you might need a chipset driver update for the CPU or you would want to grab the latest BIOS with the CPU AGESA code updates. Looks like the current version is F8f you have version FC.

NOTE: ESET Smart Security is running.

Wow, thanks a lot johnbl, this is really helpful!

I have no idea what that driver file is to be honest. Can't find any info about it either....

I'll update the Realtek driver for sure. About the BIOS, I updated from Gigabyte's official site, using their @bios utility and I thought that is the latest BIOS for my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3, Rev 3.0). Where could I get this F8f version?

I had ESET SS for the past few years now and I never had any issues with it before...Actually it has been the most reliable security software I had in the past 5+ years, so I'd be surprised if it was the culprit.

I'll also try to set my dump to full in case I get another BSOD next time. I will report back if I have any updates.

Thanks again.

Just an update, I think I found out what the mystery driver may be from the Driver Reference Table from carrona.org:

- Name: a-------.SYS
- Information: Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120% drivers
- Source: random 8 character filename starting with \"a\", and ending with .SYS (in capitals) http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/downloads
