so I 8GB of ram in my PC and I was just given 16GB of ram, all together it fits in my motherboard, but what I need to know is if I can use both of them at the same time. I've heard that if you have two different types of ram it won't affect performance EG corsair and gskill in the same PC. Both all of the sticks are DDR3 and from Gskill, but they are 2 different series.

the new ram = 16GB G.skill trident x series (2x8)

my current RAM = 8GB G.skill ripjaws series (2x4)

There is no guarantees when mixing DRAM from different packages, there's not even any guarantees if you take consecutive sticks right off the assembly line - that's why manufacturers test sticks together to ensure they will play nice ;)
