Hello!
I need some help right now. It's going to be a long post, but please read the whole thing.
So what happened was, I decided to stop what I was doing on my PC for a moment, and do something else. I closed down all the open programs, and I put my PC on sleep mode. So, then I went off, and this thing I went to do was in the same room, so, a few minutes in, I hear my PC turn on again. It was strange, because there was no output to the monitor. So, I turned off my PC and unplugged it. Then I went on my iPod to come on here to ask about it, so I open my web browser, and the first thing I see when I try to load Google is a message from my router saying that there's no broadband connection, then when I try to reload Google, it loads normally. Because I'm in the UK, the time was about 2:00 AM at the time, that was about 30 minutes ago. It's been quite windy, mo lightning, so I don't think it was a power surge, but it was strange to see the message from my router. I haven't turned my PC back on yet, as I want to know whether it will be safe to do so. Also, I use Windows 8.1, and I've never had this problem before.
It's been a long post, so well done for getting this far!
Thanks for the help!

Ah yes, sleep mode. I am running W7 Ultimate 64bit, fully up-to-date, and have had this problem off and on for a few years now. Mine, however, always loads up completely; monitor on and everything so I am able to "re-sleep" it or shut down normally. As far as I have read and from experience over the years with Windows it is a Windows glitch. Quite aggravating in the middle of the night.
I doubt that anything bad has happened to your pc, but ;when you do boot up select "Safe Mode without Networking" if given the choice (because you did a hard shut down). Once fully booted into safe mode, use the "start" button to restart normally.

Then, go into Control Panel > Power Options>Change Plan Settings>Change advanced power settings. Click the blue txt to 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' (select yes or o.k. if asked). Then change Hard disk to "never" turn off; and under "Sleep" open 'Allow wake timers' and make sure it is disabled. Doing these two things reduced my incidents of "It'Alive! It's Alive!" (LOL!) to once or twice per month - and I use sleep mode a lot.

Thanks, I'll be sure to try that out! But, whenever I have to hold the button down to shut down like I had to, when I boot my computer back up again, I don't get any options to go to safe mode (or at least I don't think I do, as when I turn on my PC I walk away and then come back when I'm ready to use it). The other thing is, there was no signal on my monitor, it never turned back on, which it always does when coming out of sleep mode. I tried turning it off and on again, and still no signal, so it put itself back into sleep mode.

Remember, my problem is with W7. W8 might not default to a choice when you re-boot after a hard shut down. If it all fired up an works, then there should be no problem. Kinda sounds like the PC tried to come out of sleep mode and just got stuck. That happened to me in Windows XP a time or two (see, told you it might be a Windows thing. LOL).
Obviously if the PC is working all the parts should be good.
Before trying to put it into Sleep Mode again, use the "start button" and shut down completely. Next time you power up again you can try "sleep" again.
