Upgrade decision Xeon E3-1240V2 or i7-3770k?

Hi, so which CPU is better for gaming? I've only read conflicting reports online.

I won't be overclocking and I already have a GPU (GTX 970). I'm currently using an i5-3340 which is struggling with some new games.

Thanks!

Solution
well if ur CPU is @ 100% and GPU is @ 70% it is your CPU or maybe the game coding also speed dosnt matter the amd FX8XXX needs to run @ 4.8~GHZ just to catch up with an intel running 3.8~GHZ

it is all about the architecture

and no ur mobo wont support Skylake it will require a new socket 1151 so u will need a new mobo

i think it will be a 1 year wait but imo it will be worth

how is the I5 struggling? i have a 3570K running it at stock / 4.9GHZ only gives me about a 7fps boost

if you're not OCing just get the 3770 NON K

btw what games are u struggling with and what res are u playing at coz the I5 is not spouse to bottleneck at all

I've been having trouble with Ground Zeroes. When I put "lighting" on Extra High all 4 cores jump up to near 100% use, my GPU stays at 60% and my frame rate goes down to around 50, sometimes down to 45.

When I put lighting just on High they all go down to around 70% and the game flatlines at 60fps.

I've tried almost everything (unparking cores etc) and nothing works. I'm starting to worry because everyone is telling me that this CPU shouldn't bottleneck. I can't find anything else wrong with the system. I actually formatted the system because the OS was slowing down but it changed nothing.

It's:

i5-3340
MSI GTX 970
8GB RAM
550W PSU
Windows 7 Home Premium

I got help in another thread and the choice for CPU came down to those two but the thread was going on and on so people stopped responding.

I'm worried that something else might be the problem and if I upgrade the CPU it'll change nothing now.

By the way I only have this problem on the levels with artificial lights, the night time levels. It seems to be the way the game handles artificial light sources and maybe shadows? Whatever "lighting" controls and how the game handles it, it just wrecks my framerate.

By the way I don't have this problem with any other game.

I wouldn't mind it but the framerate jump feels horrible while playing and I actually bought the GTX FOR this game and Phantom Pain so I'd like to play it on the highest settings.

Oh and changing the resolution doesn't help AT ALL. Even if I put the resolution up to 1440 or slightly higher it only impacts the FPS a tiny bit, and if I put it down to 1024x768 it doesn't help.

I'm not sure if my motherboard will support it? It's a Gigabyte Z77-D3H. Do you know when it releases? I don't mind waiting.

By the way the i5-3340 is only 3.10/3.30Ghz. I've been told that's kind of terrible by some people but then that it's good by others. The CPU requirements for this game were quite high. Do you think it is my CPU then?

Oh okay, thanks for your help. I really don't want to upgrade my motherboard. I can find a pretty cheap 3770k so I think I'll just settle for that for now and try overclocking if I need extra power. My main concern is that it might be something other than the CPU that I'm overlooking. Watching the stats while playing though the CPU gets pretty unhappy when it sees those lights and everyone else I've seen playing it has a slightly better CPU than me and perfect framerates.

I usually wouldn't care, I've played games where the framerate jumps between 50 and 60 every so often but for some reason when the framerate fluctuates during this game you can REALLY feel it. It really ruins the experience. The 3770k I've found is REALLY cheap so I guess I could get it and sell my current CPU and I wouldn't be spending too much.

I think you're right, it's the programming. It must use the CPU more than the GPU on Extra High settings. It was just disappointing upgrading the GPU and then running into this problem.

I know this is a really old topic (I got an email reminding me of it) but I took a screenshot of Ground Zeroes with lighting on high and then on extra high to see if I could see what it changes.

"Lighting" controls the draw distance of artificial light sources and shadows, and extra high turns on EVERY light on the stage no matter how far off (I'm sure this won't be possible in Phantom Pain) so obviously the CPU won't like that. As perfect as that game is I wish they'd put a description on what each graphic setting controls. (It's still the best Japanese PC port though)

Thought I'd put this here in case anyone else has the same issue as me. No wonder Konami put such high requirements for CPU in the minimum specs. Thanks again for our help.
