Difference between AMD and Intel?

I need to settle an argument my friends and I always get into. 2 of us are Intel fans, the other 2 are AMD fans (mostly because they are budget processors) but what really is the difference? I know Intel is better somehow but how? What makes AMD's 6 core CPU's be worse than some of Intel's 4 core?

Solution
AMD uses a lot of slower cores and intel uses a few faster cores for better single core speed. Good Single core speed (like on intel) is generally better than a lot of slower cores(like on amd) in gaming so intel chips are usually a bit better and more effectively utilize the gpu which will result in better frame rates. Though in other tasks such as rendering, video editing, etc. AMD will sometimes pull ahead because those applications benefit from more cores rather than single core speed.

I plan on buying the 4790K for my PC and I do plan on doing video editing, 3D rendering and gaming like CAD, Adobe Premiere and Battlefield 4. I will also be using the MSI GTX 970 4GB. I plan on doing gaming the most but will the 4790K do fine with all of these things? I have the corsair H100i for cooling solution so no problem there.

What do you think?

what dunlop is saying is correct, intel have less cores but of which are more powerful, thus making them better for gaming especially on games like dayz and arma 3. and is more for budget gaming and also pretty good for rendering but dont be mistaken intel processors are also good for rendering, if its games you want a processor for go for an intel i5 or an intel i7.

and the i7 4790k is the best processor for single core performance, pairing that with an msi gtx 970 will do you wonders mate, my msi gtx 970 is on its way to me :D i will be receiving it tomorrow, ps i have the i7 4790 standard version and its amazing, i previously had the amd fx-6300 and imo it wasnt very good.

The i7-4790k will do all those things quite nicely. There is really no need to second guess the CPU. If you were only interested in playing games then I would recommend you drop down to a Core i5 CPU. However, since some of the things you want to do can take advantage of Intel's Hyper Threading, the Core i7 is a good choice.

Yes the 4790k is more than enough for that. And the H100i is a good cooler it should give you plenty of room to overclock if you choose to do so.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the noise generated by that cooler. If the CPU is overclocked and you need the full performance of that cooler, when gaming with speakers blasting or headphones on, no bigga deal .... but I use my box for CAD and your using it for CAD + rendering + video editing ..., the 1950s era vacuum cleaner like noise (68dbA) generated by the 100i would drive me bonkers.

I know this would kind of be going off topic but what kind of cooler than would you recommend? Noise would be a problem for me because I also plan on doing gaming videos with the Blue yeti and noise removal works but also drops the amplification of the video and it gets hard to hear things.

What kind of water cooler is best for me? If I do not overclock will I still get all that noise?

Martinsliquid lab will let you listen doe yaself ....at 50% laod, I gotta leave the room

http://martinsliquidlab.org/2013/03/12/swiftech-h220-vs-corsair-h100i-noise-testing/

There's not a single 120/140mm CLC that beats the better air coolers either thermally or noise wise. At 240/280mm, the CLC's need extreme noise 2700 rpm speeds to beat the 1200-1500 rpm air coolers and they just squeak by. In order of performance:

Water:

Switech H240-X
Switech H220-X

Air

Cryorig R1
Noctua DH-15
Phanteks PH-TC14-PE
Thermalright Silver Arrow
Noctua DH-14

The larger Switech ironically has been cheaper at NCIX make it the "go to" choice for water... the Phanteks $60 price and aesthetics make it very attractive as it's not far behind the other 2

The other thing I should mention is that the Swiftech loops can be opened up and you can add MoBo and GFX card water blocks

Thanks everyone! I now have a better understanding between AMD and Intel. And thanks to JackNaylorPE of course for the sort of off topic discussion about coolers!
