Will a sata III hd read on a sata II port

I have an asus p5n-d mobo and I just recently bought a new hd. the new hd is a sata III and my mobo only has sata II ports. Can I still use my new hd? Also, would I have to use a sata III cable or sata II cable?

Ok, how about the cable connector? Should I be using the sata II cable connector or the sata III cable connector, or it does not matter.
