I built my computer with a 500gb hard drive and now it is starting to run low, I want to get another 500gb hard drive to add more storage to it, but is it as easy as just buying one and putting it in? Or do I have to go through formatting it, transferring data, and putting the OS on that drive too? I am not too great with partitions and formatting things like that, so I need to know what I will be up against if I decide to buy a new hardrive.

A new 1 TB HDD will serve your needs well. Buy the new HDD, connect it as a second drive, and format it NTFS. After that you may transfer some data files from the existing HDD to the new HDD if you want to. Leave the primary 500 GB HDD for the OS and all your programs, and games. New HDD for data (photos, music, video).
