My Gateway 420 is giving me no sound.

I am running XP SP3

The following are listed under Sound, Video and game controllers in DEVICE MANAGER-
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Captures Devices
Media Control Devices
NVIDIA High Definision Audio (listed 4 times)
Realtek High Definition Audio
Video Codecs

The sound card is in the computer

When I go to the volume control I get the message, "There are no active mixer devices available. to install mixer devices go to control panel..."

I have installed all of the drivers from the Gateway website for my computer.

I tried to refresh the Bios, with those from this page, http://us.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/drivers-downloads but none of them would run.

In addition, under "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" all devices listed under Hardware are working in the Device Status section.

Any suggestions?

Is the Windows Audio Serivce disable? If so, then go to Start then Run and enter "services.msc" in the box. Once you get to the services window, scroll down until you find Windows Audio. Right click on Windows Audio and select Properties and select Automatic from the dropdown box and click Start. Then click Apply and you're done.

I gave that a shot. It was already set to Automatic.
