Many users in the house

I have a 30MB plan and 7 users in the family. How do I configure my router in order to assign different channels, like 3 channels of 10MB each.
2 people are gamers... 2 are video users mostly... and the others are general use like emails, videos, FB, etc...
Hope you can give me some response soon.
Thanks!

The router does that mostly automatically.

Every device is not actively downloading all the time. It will serve up as needed.

For instance...Client A is the only device downloading something large at this moment. It gets pretty much the full 30Mbps. Client B then starts up a large download. Client A will slow down, and Client B will take up some of that 30Mbps.

What router model? QoS is not good on some routers and you may have to go to a software solution to limit users.

If they are all on wireless you are pretty much hosed though, since no wireless router alone will support multiple gamers and video users. But you also have the option of adding additional wireless access points to support your users, if most are on wireless.

A better description of your physical layout, user locations, wired/wireless, surrounding networks (like a drawing of your house and user/router locations would be very helpful for an answer that can actually help).

i don't think the average router will allow for such bandwidth prioritizing. i needed to do this a few years ago and bought a high end router to accomplish it. it allowed me to prioritize by ip address and times of day. i could set max speed and such for each ip address. this did mean giving every device static ip addresses and not allowing any other devices so no one slipped through with a random ip address. but it worked for my goals.

i was not however worried about video streaming and gaming speeds so your situation most likely wont be solved as easily since you're probably also running up against the max speed of your internet connection and/or the max number of connections the router can even handle. this was something else i struggled with was a common linksys router not being able to handle the 15+ devices that were trying to connect to it.

and now with my useless 2 cents thrown in, i hope to learn something from the 2 experts above me who will undoubtedly be able to teach us something new today :)

USAFRet is my hero, his sig says it all:
Identify the problem before applying a solution. Nothing has ever been more true. We really need to understand the problem in detail before we can come up with a viable solution.

You could always hard-wire the gaming consoles, better for connectivity reasons and it'll let the router relax on its wireless workload. Then just make sure you have a good router with superb throughput and it'll help a lot of your issues.

First of all, thank you all guys, you are so nice for such a kind and massive response. Be blessed!

On Monday we will have a new router. Have just talked with the internet supplier. Our plan changed a couple of days ago, but we cannot say we have solved the situation.
My nephew plays LoL like 5 hours a day, then my other nephew plays also the same game and use Netflix a lot. My son watch lots of YouTube videos at the same time the other 2 are playing LoL and complain a lot that You Tube videos are cutting the speed. It is a nightmare, that is why I am paying $10 more per month and have 20MB more. An important fact, here in Peru we are on summer and the kids have plenty vacations to use the internet. The passed with great grades so now that they can, they will use internet the most they want.

One of my nephews (20 year old) has a repeater modem on his bedroom as he is like 20mts far from the house (in a little cabin in the backyard). So, he catches up signal from the main router (which is about to be changed), he has the worst place on this repartition, as for sure the ones living in the house near the router are the ones catching better signal.

The internet provider said that they are not able to configure such a need (separate channels from one router).
Right now we have a Thomson router... do not know what we will have on monday but they mentioned that this optic fiber service needs a new router for such a bandwidth.

I really appreciate your comments, for what I am reading from you, do not think the new router will help if we do not organize the router inside... so, I just need a "for really dummies" solution, I am a 44 year old with few knowledge about this things. So a tutorial will help, and if you can propose one, maybe a Your Tube video or something it would really help!
Regards!!!

There is no dummies solution for this, you can easily add additional routers configured in AP mode if needed though. The repeater is going to be fairly useless with all the other wireless users IMO.

Can anyone attach by cable? Just draw a rough sketch of the house and where the users are located and what their anticipated uses include, more information is essential to a good solution.
