Hi, So recently I built a new computer and I will get these Freezes at random points in time. The Most recent was when I was playing skyrim, Keep in mind I had an Enb on so it was heavier than the original game. The freeze lasted for about 30 seconds Until skyrim Crashed and Went to desktop. another time it happened when I was doing school work Online But that one only lasted for about 10 seconds. I am also using the stock cooler for my 8350 if That helps at all.
My specs are as follows:
Evga 980 Sc reference Design
AMD FX 8350 4ghz
16 gb ddr3 ram
Gigabyte Motherboard Ultra Durable series GA-970A-UD3P
Windows 8.1

Solution
no worries - the main point of difference between the boards, is the MSI does not support SLI, just Crossfire, so if you're planning on putting a 2nd 980 in, you'll need the ASrock instead as it supports SLI.

Have fun :)

Are you overclocking? If so, that cooler is not sufficient, dial it back to stock speeds until you get a better CPU cooler.

Secondly, check the Windows Event Viewer - this will tell you what failed and caused the crash - check under Administrative Events.

Have you done the basics? Updated to latest BIOS, Updated Chipset Drivers, updated the GFX drivers (There was a new driver for the 970 just the other day from Nvidia so I assume there's one for the 980 too). Try re seating your RAM as well (sometimes they can play up when they get hot and loose contact, especially if it was a cheap brand)

Well no I'm not overclocking, I don't really feel comfortable with it Because you can ruin your Cpu by doing that. and Yeah I have updated everything and I just checked the ram and its in perfectly, I took it out and placed it back in just to be sure.

Hmm...for a new system, that Gigabyte MOBO is an October 2013 release designed for the AMD 6300s and AMD 270's GFX - Nvidia had the GTX650 out about then, and it would handle the GTX750 too I imagine - it's had a few rebirths, but it's pretty middle range and barely in spec for your processor and GFX, which I suspect, is the cause of your problems (if you've checked out the above basic fixes)

Not saying it wont work with some more BIOS tweaking etc, but there's newer Chipsets and better Nvidia compatibility on the newer boards (You've essentially stuck and Nvidia card in a board designed specifically for 12-18 month old AMD GFX in mind (with Nvidia support) - Can you return the board and get a newer one? Did you take a look at the newer boards? Those numbers make a difference, 970A vs. 990FX for instance refer to the Chipset that drives the MOBO - i.e. connects the RAM, CPU, GFX all together and ensures they communicate properly.

ASRock http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=ASRock+%28990FX-EXTREME3%29&N=-1&isNodeId=1
GIGAByte - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=GA-990FXA-UD3&N=-1&isNodeId=1

These boards are better suited to your CPU and GFX - the GIGA board has better power (8+2 phase) than the ASRock (4+1) - so go with the GIGA for better power stability.

So What did event viewer tell you anyway, the crash logs for Windows would have said what was failing?

Okay So I Checked The event viewer and I'm going to paste the ones that I saw because I Have no idea what they mean. "The systems Firmware has changed The processor's Memory Type Range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (s5). This can result in reduced resume performance" There was only one other error that I spotted and that was " A fatal Alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of connection" Keep in mind these were all in the System Section of the event viewer. The only Other section that had any errors were in the application section and it was steam's connection encountering an error.

make sure you're logged in as Administrator - you want to look under the Administrative Events (it's under Custom Views) - all warnings, Stops, Criticals, driver failure, service starts and stop events etc will list here. If you're not logged in as admin, it will display nothing, but at the top it will say something like " Administrative Events Number of events: [some number] (disabled)

Actually what PSU do you have in the system?

See here for the first error you mentioned - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/the-system-firmware-has-changed-the-processors/c1fd88e3-3d23-43c7-a640-06750c82abd5 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/266283

For the second one regarding the fatal Alert - whats the next bit of the message? - Gogle it - https://www.google.com.au/search?q=A+fatal+Alert+was+generated+and+sent+to+the+remote+endpoint.+This+may+result+in+termination+of+connection&gws_rd=cr&ei=AH-rVMa7J8nl8AWpnIDQDg there are many reasons for this but it relates to Netowrking - could be Steam Client related/Skype/Outlook email - it should tell you which application caused it under the details section

With no critical errors, I'm thinking this is still MOBO compatibility issue or possibly the PSU - but you're not reporting power issues so unlikely.

Well I'm using a evga 600b PSU I'm planning to upgrade but as it stands now I don't really have the money to. And yes the rest of the second error was with steam

What power supply are you using? I had a problem very similar, turned out to be the power supply (took 2 mobos, 3 video cards, 3 sets of memory, new drives, new SATA cables, BIOS upgrades, etc) and going through every possible configuration for a couple of weeks (literally thinking I was going mad and losing hair!) before the only component not replaced was the Antec TruePower (POS) power supply. Turns out, thousands of people had complaints about this particular line of power supplies (lock ups under load).
I had 2 more on client machines (they had lock up problems as well) and replaced them w/ another brand - their problems disappeared as well. Antec has offered to replace the defective units , though, they are all defective as they use bottom of the barrel capacitors that are not temp rated high enough (I learned this from another forum).

That PSU is fine - review her http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/600B/11.html - but if there's a fault it'll need replacing - need to check the volages to be sure.

I'd definitely look at replacing the MOBO with a newer one and I reckon this will solve your problem - the 970A just wasn't designed specifically with the newer AMD Chips or the GTX 9 series GFX cards, they were made for older chips - they didn't put SLI capabilities on it, just Crossfire. RMA The board and grab the 990FX instead for the extra $40 - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=GA-990FXA-UD3&N=-1&isNodeId=1

I have the i7-4790k on a ASUS Maximus VII Ranger - after I updated the BIOS, it runs like a dream.
Any mainboard that is Haswell ready will do the job - if you jump on PC Part Picker and put your items in, it will tell you if there are compatibility issues. You can then post the link here of your build and we can take a look and offer further advice.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/ - just select your county up the top and click Get Started (It may look like your browser stalls on the Memory page - just wait it out...it's a long list).

In short, you need an LGA1150 socket and you should go for at least a Z97 chipset for that processor, Z99's are the latest - most of the MSI Gaming boards will be fine, but there's plenty to choose from.

Also, that i5 processor is designed specifically for Overclocking, the Intel stock cooler it comes with should go straight in the bin, its complete rubbish - get yourself a good quality custom cooler like the Noctua-D14, or if you feel rich, (and have the case space for a 240mm or 280mm radiator) you can splash some extra cash on an NZXT X61 AIO Liquid cooler or Corsair H105 which gives around the same cooling performance, costs about US50 more but looks cool too (I also reckon they're easier to install than some of the big Air coolers and they do not stress the motherboard with several pounds of metal hanging off it - Lots of people get the EVO 212 because its cheap and a good performer - just a shame its one of the most difficult Heat sink installs out there and many people have damaged their parts trying to install it or by installing it incorrectly..
