I had an Apple MacBook Pro which I sold just before Christmas, so before selling I copied all my thousands of photos and songs onto a WD My Book Studio 2tb. I have now just purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 and the lady in PC World said it would just be a case of copying everything back over to my new laptop. However upon plugging it in, it doesn't show up in My Computer. I found it under Devices and Printers in the Control Panel, however double clicking doesn't actually open it so I can see my files and folders, it simply shows the properties. I have looked at other threads which say looking at the Disk Management but I don't really know what to look for but there doesn't seem to be a problem. It also says on the box that it "requires reformatting for Windows" however surely reformatting would wipe all my files from the hard drive therefore defeating the purpose that I bought it for?!
Please help - I need the files on my new computer! thanks.

Hey there, Ginzy111!

Sorry to hear about your backup problems with WD My Book Studio.
This model of My Book is formatted in HFS+ for use of Mac OS X, in order to be able to use it with Windows it needs to be reformatted in NTFS/FAT32.
You could try using a third-party utility to access the drive on your Windows 8 laptop as Ijack suggested.
The other option is to backup all the files from the external on another Mac and then reformat the My Book in FAT32, so that it could be accessed from both - Mac OS X and Windows computers. Here's a link that explains how to perform this on Windows: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=SpTNjT
Afterwards you just need to copy back the files to the external HDD and transfer it on your Windows...
