External HDD via USB3.0 for media storage instead of internal hdd

I just switched from a desktop to a laptop. I had two hard drives in my Desktop, one was for OS and applications, etc. The other I used to store all my photos, music and such. It wasn't an issue really because obviously the computer would read the media drive just as fast as the C drive so all was good. I would like to take my D drive, put it in a enclosure and do the same thing, now I know it would be kind of a pain because then I would HAVE to have my external hdd with me wherever I take my laptop if I wanted to access any media files, but ignoring that annoyance for a second, would buying a USB 3.0 compatible enclosure still offer smooth performance so that I could easily use it as my D drive?

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

Hi there jrocktothebeat,

As long as you use the external drive for just storing stuff on(not running programs and games of it) it should be fine. Just keep in mind that the transfer speeds will not be as fast as a SATA connection.
