Greetings and a Warm and Peaceful New Year.

Background: I successfully installed Windows 7 on my only hard drive, a 120gb SSD drive. After installing 3 games, I am now practically out of space. I have ordered 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive. I have saved all my files. I plan on reinstalling Windows 7 OS and other programs on the SSD drive and pictures, documents, games on the HD.

Question 1: When I originally set up Windows 7, I made a system image and a repair disk. With an SSD drive can one just reinstall Windows 7 from a system image as one would do with a HD drive? Are there any special steps one must perform?

Question 2: If for some reason, the reinstallation from the system image does not work, can I just reinstall Windows 7 as I did originally? (I will connect my 1TB drive and set it up as a secondary drive only after Windows 7 has been installed on the SSD drive.)

I have read several posts on reinstalling a Windows 7 on an SSD, many of which seem somewhat lengthy, e.g.,

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html

If the above link is not the best way of reinstalling Window 7 on an SSD drive that previously had Windows 7 OS, what steps/links do you recommend?

Thanks!

Hi,

Question 1: Yes, you can reinstall Windows from a system image just the same way you would do with a HDD.

Question 2: Yes, of course. In fact, this is what I recommend you since a clean installation is always preferred (though you will have to configure Windows and install your programs again). I mean booting from the original Windows image and formating/deleting your SSD partitions, then select it to install Windows on it.

You can format and use your SSD as it was a HDD, no problems with this. When you receive and install your HDD on your PC, don't forget to go to Computer Management / Disk Management, right click on the HDD and create a new volume in order to see it in file explorer and start using it to store your data.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I will reinstall my windows 7 on my SSD from my system image as I have done in the past when reinstalling it on a HDD. I will also go to " Computer Management / Disk Management, right click on the HDD and create a new volume."

Thanks again.
