Trying to decide which of these is better for gaming

Solution
Without even addressing any of the other parts in the build, immediately I'll say that if gaming is your focal point, you want to go with the 4690k as it games equal to the i7 in nearly every title. I'd also ditch the GTX 980 and go with the 970. It's almost as powerful as the more expensive card and with two 970's which is not that much more than a single 980, and which the second card can be added down the road if you like, the dual 970's is much more powerful than a single 980 and only 10-20% less powerful than dual 980's.

So save the money. In fact, you can overclock a single 970 to near 980 performance. So I'd say to go with the second build and drop the card down.

Everything else looks fine.
