Router/modem internet access cuts out regularly

Hi,

My ISP provides a router modem as standard (they don't allow third party equipment) and recently it has been cutting out during general usage and gaming. Windows 7 registers 'limited access.' Resetting the router reproducibly solves the issue, the problem is that we have to do this several times a day and this doesn't agree with our gaming habits! The router is a thomson 870.

We recently had the ISP replace the equipment with a new one and we have the same problem. Some friends have suggested that there is a problem with our line in but then why would simple restarts solve the issue?

As an aside I noticed that when this happens, downloading seems to cutout after uploading e.g. I will not be able to request new data but data I have already requested will continue to come through. I noticed this using mumble where people would stop hearing me before I would stop hearing them by about 10 seconds.

Thanks for any help offered. I will probably refer this to my ISP asap but if I can go into dealing with them with some knowledge that might help to get this resolved quickly.

Thanks,

That's ok because most of the time using a non-ISP-provided router will result in high amounts of instability of your DSL (or VDSL which I highly doubt since your router is a Thomson) connection. Do some research about the routers your ISP uses. If they use ZTE routers by all means force them to give you one of those, from my experience they are one of the best consumer grade routers, second to the Siemens Gigaset SX763 WLAN (Only the ones made in Germany)

Thomson TG870 is a piece of s**t, contact your ISP and demand a new router immediately, also, tell them to inspect your DSLAM port and the copper line going from the DSLAM to your house. are you by any chance on T-com?

Ah, the irony my friend. I literally just wrote out a entire step by step guide and my internet done the same thing. In most cases it's your ISP's fault, generally a DNS stability issue which comes with cheaper providers. You can't do too much to counter it, however I found one thing that tends to extend my time before it drops out.

Type into your browser either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, it should be one or the other. You'll need to login in which is generally admin, admin for both username and password unless you've changed it. Now I'm not familiar with your router but you'll either have it somewhere in the 'connection' settings or something similar. You should find the modem/router's DNS settings, leave the primary one the same however with the second one type in 8.8.8.8 which is Google's public DNS.

It might help a bit, let me know how it goes.

Actually in Ireland so I am with UPC. Have had them for years with some issues which were resolved (if not always very quickly). Thanks for the tips, will try them out later and let you know. Hadn't thought of DNS but its worth a shot.

No worries, let us know if it extends the time.

I remember I did the same with mine, they just said we can't do anything. The guy was pretty straight forward about the quality being pretty crap, hopefully your ISP isn't as shit.

Unfortunately we are locked into using this router and the ISP has gone to every available effort to block any sort of bridge to another router. Have a technician coming tomorrow so we will see then I guess. Thanks for contributing.
